How can I make realistic lookin hair on my characters? Also, Do I need to animate it so it looks as realistic as possible? On that factor there, I wouldn't have a clue of how to animate hair!!!

What I would do is follow my low polygon hair tutorial, UVMap the hair you make, texture it, then creat alpha maps on the same UVMap, and it should look realistic

Here is my hair modelling tutorial
(This isn't directed at Anim8or but it will work with anim8or)

But that's like a solid object. Hair isn't solid... or is it?

Yes but then you put an alpha map on, which only shows the hair strands.

Explain to me why some people pay money for 3d software? Its not 3d till its been blended. wwww.blender3d.org

What's an alphamap? I'm very new to 3D modelling, and have no idea what an alphamap is.

Here is an alpha map of a chain-link fence:

You just take a plane, use that texture as an alpha map, and only the white part will show. This way you can have way less geometry and keep the detail. I doubt that any game has an actual model of a chainlink fence, its just an alpha mapped plane.

You can do the same thing with hair, you just need to find/make an alpha map for it.
Here is another example of an alpha map:
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Image:Tutorials-Textures-Maple_ColorAlpha.png

This one has its own alpha channel, which means it doesn't have to be black and white, the creator of it specified which parts are transparent. You can make a very realistic looking leaf by making a plane, and giving it that alpha map.

its a transparancy map that determines which parts of the object a transparent, which can be drawn in a paint program, but its best to UV map your object (Basically setting the coordinates on your object to fit a texture and an image texture of the UV coordinate are exported) so you can see where you are drawing...

Eg.

Lets say we have a plane/square object I want to put this weed texture on, to emulate weeds without modelling them (as the polygon count would be too high)

If I applied the texture on its own we would see the unwanted green bits.
So I would make an alpjha map of the texture, which would look like this

Hope that helps

It's becomeing clearer, but it's still a little confusing...

So, you basically get a picture with hair on it. Then what do you do?
