/shrug - lots of acronyms have changed since the noob infestation of the internet in the mid-90's - your not even allowed to say mouses anymore without some white collared over-educated non-geek saying 'excuse me, that should be spelt mice'.

Kale, net is roughly 14-15years old ... atleast in a widespread BBS compacity, and i've been on it since '89
so technically that'd make me a NEToldie no?

lol, been on the net so long, and i still can't bloody use html

aww... i remember in the good ol' days, when pcitures took 20minutes to download and there was no such thing as 'massive multiplayer online' games ... you whipper snappers don't know how goods you is getting it, with your new fangled broadband services, and digital subscriber lines, being able to see movies in realtime. If you wanted to see a movie in realtime when i was a lad you have to draw it in ascii format and use the page down key, and even then it wasn't in realtime!
and flash, Ohh arn't you spoilt with flash! i remember back in the ISP war of 19... :: (-_-) z z z Z Z Z ::

Ironically I can't really do any of that, my broadband has a bandwidth cap and downloading large files, movies and playing online games are a big no no. =(

The fast internet is still good though. lol

even with a bandwidth cap, i'm going to guess you have a faster connection than most dialup users...

and we play games online fine, well those of us who've grown up as HPB (and anyone who doesn't know what that Acronym stands for is WAAAY to young hehee)

Wrong, actually. According to my sources, the net has been around since the 70's, though only used by universities and scientists to send each other research information (and play Dungeons and Dragons).

(I think all the above is correct, feel free to say otherwise).

Some basic network functions where available on a network which grew into the internet. You'd have had a hard job pointing your browser at anything back then though.

Now who here remembers Oracle?

Here's a test for you.

Heard of Olliveti?
You know your brands, (they arn't widely known in the UK anymore)

Remember Unisys?
You are an old-timer

Remember Sperry?
Ye gods man, get back in that chair or grab a zimmer frame.

Know what links them all together?
Perhaps it is time you thought about an alternative carear.

yup... Oracle is hardly old
not sure about Prestel though (^_^)

and shadow i know how long the net itself had been going (1982 was the year it was made "official" as it was the same year the first smilie was ever sent - and a very important year for me - also the year Elite was created and a very important year for me )

that aside, it was hardly what i'd call widespread until the earli 90's when it finally hit 1million users
i think it was around '91-92 it actually started getting real popular because we finally got the 14,400 baud modem ... which was a huge jump from the 9,600 baud we were all using before them ... and infact it was the same year that Haynes release a 28,800 baud modem.

thought i still wanna know who here knows what a HPB is

lmao ... i'm not sure what links them all, but i know of Olliveti very well (used to be a very good brand of IBM alternative) - Unisys, i think most will know of them after that arugment about gifs ... and i've heard of Sperry, but not sure what they ever did.

but i have a feeling they're all offshoots of the same company

yeah all reincarnaion or offshoots of each other. Sperry made a rather excellent XT clone with a hinged lid, if only end users had seen the beauty in this engineering computers now would be a joy and we wouldn't have Unisys.

Clearly I need to go a little further back into digital history to loose you, remember what was non-standard about the Herculesee clad monstrociy known as the Victor Sirius? For all intents and purposes an 'MS-DOS compatable' computer, but something was wrong with that label....

lol... Oki, well i've kinda been nodding off - and i have been ordered to sleep, so perhaps i should hehee

but if my memory is correct the Victor Sirius was the attempt at a personal computer, which had problems with memory management under MS-DOS ... however oddly worked okay with DR-DOS
however i could be wayy off base and be thinking of another system

I had a Victor so i've got an unfair advantage here

It ran MS-DOS alright - just not on standard formatted floppy disks so you had to buy your software with Victor's mark up on it.

Thankfully they went bankrupt, but the picture on the manual was nice. It was the first time I ever saw that many computers in one place - I wonder if it actually was a production line or just where they dumped all the unsold ones...

i have a DB Standard one i did about... oh god must be 3years ago now

i used the line commands and some fancy math to truely recreate the version i remember, and you couldn't do much in it - just fly about, dock and hyperjump. maybe i'll dig it out ... or tommorrow after i finish the last of Rose's stuff i'll work on it again.

that said Glennyboy is working on what looks to be a very impressive recreation and i'm definatly looking forward to it ... perhaps see what Sam says about my Network code cause i always felt that Elite would've been bloody outstanding being an Online Game.
I remember a mate hacked the Amiga version so you could link 2 Amiga's up through the Serial port and play within the same universe
was an experience - but kinda too limited hehee

I am impressed! I thought about it myself but that would drift it away from my own working prog. Just improve the graphics. Thats all I care about.

Elite 2 - Oh my god. Who said realism was going to work. If it did there would be no sound effects in the Star Wars dogfights. Unless you believe that crap about simulated sound to aid the pilots.

you still hear sound in spacial dogfights
the resonance on the craft when things pass close enough, as there is nothing to displace but the displacement itself, it means that you get a physical manifestation (as in shockwaves) which will resonate the hull and become sound in the air... so won't sounds like they would in air itself, more like a name that tune kinda thing.

but obviously a laser bolt a good km away isn't going to make a sound, nither are engines unless your in the wake of them... but it probably would be possible to setup a resonance checker to pin point where and the power of a blast and audiably help pilots
i mean it would help alot, if you don't believe that ... play something like Tie Fighter vs X-Wing without sound, you'll do worse - i mean not dramatically, but its good to know what is comming from where and when.

my mate (who i currently work with as part of FMTau but also works for Alias|Wavefront) is certainly an impressive coder ... its annoying i seem to be surrounded by them, yet can't code for squat myself hehee

I played X-wing alliance and I perfectly happy that the realism was ditched for gameplay. Surely any disruption on a ships frame would merely be a rumble etc not an accuratly depicted sound effect.
