When I am finished with my (weapon) model in milkshape, am I supposed to unweld all the vertices?

I know Karate, Kung Fu, and 47 other dangerous words...

No, just export it via the Directx(JT) method mentioned in these forums. Why would you want to unweld the vertices? You want them to stay intact. Make sure to add at least one animation to your weapon before exporting it. Unless you have at least one animation, it appears that the weapon won't show up in the HUD.

When I import FPSC models into Milkshape, all the vertices are unwelded.

That's just how directx importers work, it seems they make each vertex unique. Technically directx models aren't meant to be an "editing" format, but more of a end-stage format.

So in this case, yes you probably want to weld adjacent vertices, it's better to work with a "closed" mesh in most cases.
