what is your favourite type of model to make
(weapon,terrain,people,etc...)

There are two types of people in this world: people who are extremly cool and are good at everything and people who are me.

Thats easy, people, flows so nicely, and is you can have various levels of challenge, cars would prolly come second, modelling wise, to me they aren't all that differant

I’d have to say I enjoy creating static models, buildings, halls, "scene fillers" i.e. garbage bins, light posts, computers etc.

It's fun to recreate mechanical stuff, I'd have to say guns - but anything like that suits me. I used to work in project engineering and CAD and part of my job was to re-engineer steel components exactly (for the oil industry) using micrometers and TurboCAD - for me it's quite straightforward to recreate stuff - a different skill altogether to get it looking good and staying sensible for DBPro.

I'd say human modelling was the trickiest of all, you should try low poly character modelling in Rhino3D for some pain - damn I need to find a better way , Rhino is just so good at making replica's though with it's eye-watering nurbs.

@Van, I'm interested in tools like Rhino 3D, as a buy to increase my modelling speed, how would you compare it to modo, ZBrush and Silo?

Quote: "I'd say human modelling was the trickiest of all"

I find once you start, you really get into it, like I have, has been recently when I decided to move away from it, I think human modelling is addictive, and the beauty is it has a nice learning curve once started, I've managed to improve myself quickly through it, but then it is what I've shaped my style on, so would prolly be differant for other people

I've never used those - but I recommend trying the demo of Rhino - it should let you save 30 times, but it's plenty to get an idea of how it works. There's simply no better nurbs modeller - it's so good at handling insane shapes sometimes it's scary . It does take a little practice to learn, but anyone with CAD experience will feel right at home, it's awesome to be able to cut a hole in something by first modelling the hole , once you get used to that it's real quick to get your models made. It treats standard polygon meshes and nurbs differently, usually you'd make your model from nurbs then convert to a polygon mesh where you can vertice edit and do all the fiddly bits.

The last proper model I made was a M4A1 Carbine modelled in Rhino in the space of 1-2 hours, compared to another 20 hours to texture and animate!.

I haven't really touch that type of modelling, as it appears from my tools its not good for what I do, but I know these pipeline modellers are more sophisticated when it comes to stuff like nurbs.

Glad I listened to Mr Impey in year 9 with the old Acorn computers Mind you I work with a cad style work out anyway

Sounds like boolean tools, they are kewl

Cheers dude, I might download Silo, Zbrush, Modo and Rhino Demos and see what I like best

I like modelling the infernal bowels of a burning earth which is being detonated by thousands of lightning bolts created by the hand of zeus 360 whilst he munches on the edge of a distant universe.

Thats just me tho .

I like Blender alot, its so awesome, and if you customise it like me its just so fun!

EDIT: Its the only way i can focus on modelling, otherwise i get distracted and just dose off or start impersonating robert plant or jim morrison.

I don't like modeling anything at all. It's work. But I have to do it anyway.

i like doing characters, there's so much more room for a bit of artistic flair, where there's none for current guns, cars, mechanics etc.

seppuku (and anyone else that's interested):

silo: this is a very cheap ($100) sub D modeller. If you're happy keeping everything in quads (which can be a pain for game modelling) it looks pretty good.

modo:similar sort of thing, but has quite an awesome unwrap tool, that lets you unwrapp anything by picking your UV seams, and then just dragging the model out flat. a nicer version of pelt mapping in 3dsmax 8

zbrush:If you find a demo of this, i'll be interested in where. zbrush is a completely new way of modelling, you paint onto the objects surface, using push/pull type brushes. The software automatically puts the new verts and polys in the right place to make the topology. I'm not sure that its found much use yet, apart from showing off, and for normal maps. it's certainly not suitable for games, as you have no proper control over poly counts.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

So, got any concept art, sounds relative easy Actually that has given me an idea too, damn you ODD MIND!!!!!

Quote: "Only problem it is the fact that its being run on windows :p"
I agree thats the only problem with it, its tends to ruin my screenshots too, which is why I cut out the good bits

lol @ Manic, thanks, strangely thoses are the three modellers I've been looking at I heard Modo crashes a lot, I know someone who's been work real hard on this amazing scene and it keeps crashing, I might go for Zbrush, from the demo it seems pretty damn sweet, and I've seen the results from people I know on other forums, and seems pretty quick and easy too.

Oh and the demo is on the Zbrush website

http://pixologic.com/

And go into 'ZDownloads' then 'ZBrush 2 demo'
When I get another job I'll prolly buy it

Thats awesome. I never bothered to learn Blender, I like trueSpace.

My favorite thing to model would be scene fillers, like what smoked said.

An interpretation on the bowel theory:

At last...i can rest..
:p

Unfortunately i was struck by a sudden attack of laziness and was unable to make zeus 360's head/hand.

I love to model swords + guns and stuff...but thats really easy. I model landscapes from scratch which I really enjoy doing. Im awful at people, thats next on my list of things to learn how to do. I'd be stoaked to get some nice swords + guns to model

Yeah they're great to model, quick and easy too, sure t.ed and such like apps are easier and more efficient, but don't feel like your own work.

@Ooga booga, kewl, well I'll get my interpretion out the way, I was thinking of the inside of the earth where there is fire and lightning.
