hello everyone.

I am finished with phoenicas, my 2d frantic shooter!
http://www.phoenicas.com

I am starting promotion right now, sending to sites, press release etc, however, I'd like to get a final opinion from darkbasic users!
what is troubling me is: is the game too difficult?
I am talking about easy mode (default in demo).
phoenicas is a hardcore shooter and looks up to the likes of defender, galaga, phoenix etc. Are we used to games being too easy?
I'd appreciate your feedback.
demo is good for 1 day (this will change to 90 minutes in a few days, so hurry!)

there is online highscore tables (thanks spooky for your help!)

demo download page:http://www.phoenicas.com/phoenicas_getdemo.html

direct demo download:http://www.phoenicas.com/phoenicas/phoenicas_demo.exe

default keyboard controls are:
z,x: move left and right
space: fire
right shift: shield
/: autostraight (or cancel autoaim)
<,>: rotate left and right (used in expert modes)
these can be changed through the options menu,
or you can use the mouse.

is the mouse control weird?

some words on the game:
After a successful alien attack on earth, only 6 humans escaped. Five are onboard non-firing space vessels and one (you) is piloting the only remaining fighting craft. Your mission is to guard the vessels on the journey to safety. Aliens will attack the convoy and try to kill you and abduct the vessels, eliminating the human race.
Phoenicas is an action-oriented musical 2d shooter in the styles of defender, exerion, phoenix, ikaruga and space invaders. Blast the invaders to pieces while protecting the last remaining humans, using upgradeable weapons and powerups and fight your way through the choreographed levels and game modes to achieve the highest scores. Score by combos, fastkills, selective shooting and accuracy, as well as effectively protecting and rescuing humans from the hands of the aliens.

cheers and looking forward to your comments.

aristides,
athens, greece.

I couldn't get it to work. It installed fine but when I ran it the loading screen came up with a little 'antialiasing...' in the top left. The dots move but then stop and I get an error:
"Runtime Error 118 - Array does not exist or array subscript out of bounds at line 157"
I'm running windows 98, 64mb gfx card, 256mb ram, p3 900mhz.

From the screen shots the game looks good though, I can't wait to play it.

thanks for the feedback mr joe.
this is an error that ocurs when the filename of the main exe is not "phoenicas.exe" and is for protection.
have you renamed the main exe?
maybe the program will not run under win98, havent tried it.

please try this:
make a new program and just type:

print appname$()
wait key

and run it.
does it display the app's name correctly?
thank you.
your computer seems a bit underpowered, phoenicas shouldnt run at full speed on it.
my guess is that its win98's fault.
thanks again.
hope you get to see the game.

aristides.

It seems to display the correct file name. It's probably just win98's fault.

I loved the game, but think the ship needs to move faster...had a hard time getting into position to OWN the ships. Other then that, way cool!

ye, ship should move at mouse speed, gameplay would be much better, also, gun heating shouldnt be so fast. GREAT GREAT GREAT GAME, LOVED IT

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120....

I really like this game, I get an error when I try and raise my shields though. A runtime error.

thanks for the feedback,
sorry, I didnt check this thread sooner, as I thought I had email notifications for it (I was wrong).

I have changed the speed of the ship, it is now about double *gulp* of what it was before. Not mouse speed though, this would ruin the keyboard player's playing, not to mention the game itself. If you tried the earlier demo with the slow ship, downloading the new one will reset your demo timer (60 minutes).

a runtime error when raising shields I havent heard of this before.
dont know what to say really, I am guessing its a darkbasic compatibility issue. code is quite clean by now, and I've raised shields millions of times... sorry to hear this is happening for you.

also, website is redesigned for release,
www.phoenicas.com

thanks for trying it out!
