For my space combat game, graphics like explosions and shield effects. I want them to be translucent so you can still see the ship beneath them.

Any way of making cool ones other than taking out every other pixel?

If it is 2d then you can use:
SET SPRITE Sprite Number, Backsave, Transparency

Or if its 3d use a textured plain and:
GHOST OBJECT ON Object Number, Ghost Effect
