We all want it, but only few have achieved it. After some recents post landscapes caught my eye and I decided to give it a go. After some trial and error I finally managed to import some landscapes into FPSC.

Here's the result of my work. I'm thinking about putting a landscape pack together for a small fee (due to all the work that will go into it). If people are interested in such a pack, please let me know.

Landscapes work fine in FPSC, but if you're only going to use open space with hills as I've done, the framerate will drop drastically when adding to many enemies. I was fine adding 5 of them, but no more, but my pc isn't the newest one. The way around this problem is putting structures into the landscapes. This can easily be achieved since I'll be adding floor/ground tiles that match the landscapes also. This to create wide open spaces.

Now let me show some of the results!

I never found any difficulties making and importing landscapes.

They still have to be small in polygons and overall a small outdoor space. Otherwise your FPS will drop so low it will die.

Also, I found some entities who go over terrain such as this decide to hop around on it for some time before they run down.

Nice work BTW.

What programs do people use to create landscapes? I'm thinking of getting T.e.d or 3DWS, what others are there that work with FPSC?

repeat after me, you are not a developer.

@ jacko101: I have 3D Canvas Freeware, but I'm thinkin of getting pro. I know that could do it real easy.

@ Benjamin A: Are these entities or segments? Cause if they're segments, this is awesome.

Great joke about no more life on mars (lol).

These are entities, since as far as I know using this as segments isn't really possible. They're static entities though, that means they're treated as entities and you can hide behind them, climb on them and the do not take up any speed at all.

I've redone the Mars ones and I'm finished with those. Created 14 mountains/hills, 2 volcanos and 2 craters. Complete with some matching ground tiles. Next I'll work om some earth landscapes and then on some moon stuff and I'll release it.

Mine are also entities, but entities take up 'game speed' - static or not. And when your non-static entities (enemies) and yourself run up and over these, it takes math. And math means loss in speed.
And with FPS outdoor scenes tend to flow very slowly.

Good luck with the work, however. I managed to make a few smaller outdoor areas, a WWI and WWII trench worked great.

Glad to someone who knows how to do terrain (i'm not the only one...).

I achieved something similar for my sci-fi game (pic attached).

I would suggest woring on the texture, making them high-res and more detailed...and getting rid of those black bit on the hills.

High-res? They're 512x512, I don't think FPSC will take higher than that. At least I've tried 1024x1024, but the result was the same.

I'm in the process of creating a demo with the mars landscape. I've placed a good number of large mountains in the demo (over 10) and they don't have any influence on the fps at all. If take some out or add some more, it doesn't matter at all.

The demo level is 40x40 tiles big. On it I've placed 3 small prefab rooms, 1 large prefab room with a courtyard in front of it. I've placed 2 enemies on top of the courtyard, a bit like snipers in a tower. Inside the buildings I've added enemies also. In total I've got 7 enemy characters in the level. Also I added some weapons, ammo, switch to open a door and 7 other items to collect. Of course the 10+ mountains are in it also.

The level runs 22-33 fps depending on the position you're in. In the largest open area it drops to 22, the rest is around 30. The main fps killer isn't the static entities at all, it's the dynamic ones, especially the enemy characters.

The demo will be released when the landscape pack is ready.

I've did some optimzing of the landscapes and the demo level also. I'm now able to place even more landscape items and still get an even higher framerate. I'm now getting 26-33fps, instead of 22-33fps, so that is a great improvement.

Here's what the complete landscape pack will have (landscape items are mountains, hills & volcanos):

- Earth: 39 landscape items, 10+ floor segments. The earth landscape items will give you grass, rock, snad-like and snow landscapes.
- Mars: 16 landscape items, 4 floor segments and 2 craters.
- Moon: 6 landscape items, 3 floor segments and 2 craters.
- Alien Planet: 8 landscape items, 2+ floor segments.

The screenshot shows the improved Mars landscape. This is the view from one of the corners of the map. Besides 18 mountains/hills. there are also 4 small and 1 larger building, 8 characters and a number of other items on the map.

Here are some preview pics of the rock, snow, sand and alien planet landscapes. These will be the last preview pics before the landscape pack will be released. These are previews only, not final versions.

This first screenshot is of a rock mountain.

I'd be more than interested in something like this for a small fee. Any mode, weapon, map, or landscape packs are OK by me even if you have to pay a fee. As long as their royalty free, and of equal or higher quality to the default materials that come with FPS Creator.

In short, I don't mind handing over a little money for high quality materials I can use in a game that I can sell without having to seek permission after.
