Hi I downloaded a 3DS to x format converter but it makes the fiel sioze massive. I want to move away from 3DS as I understand files load slowly, but unless I get a more efficient converter I can't use x format either... Anyone got a Converter that works without making the x file massive... eg.

Converted a 1.6MB 3DS file and ended up with a x file of 11MB

Anyone ???

Some one said that you could load into DBPRO and Save Object.. assumign I can load large 3DS files into DBPRO, takes ages and hangs...

Lithunwrap will load .3ds models (and many others as well) and save them out to boatloads of formats. You see the problem with .3ds files is that a vertix can only be attached to one face. Therefore if you have a simple cube, rather than having 8 vertices like most other formats, .3ds files will have 48 vertices!!! Lithunwrap has a utility called "Optimize Model" that will find all these duplicated vertices and combine them into a single vertix.

I am a little curious though, what kind of model were you hoping to use in DBPro that takes a 1.6MB .3ds file? In order to have a file of that size, you must have quite a few vertices & polies!!! If you are thinking you can drag some 300000 poly model in DBpro and have any kind of FPS you're sorely mistaken.

Intel Pentium 4, 3.4GHz, 1280MB RAM, NVidia Quadro FX3000/256MB, 240GB HD, XP Pro

The convertor does not make the x file massive. Standard X files are massive. 3ds is binary, standard X is a text file. Check the exporter options (of your app) to see if it can export the X as compressed binary. This normally brings a 12mb x file to about 3-4mb.

The file could be large from animation keyframes. The FPS Creator characters are about 2k polys but with 2k+ frames of animation. They come in about 12mb (uncompressed).
