1)low poly model
2)medium poly model

another cheap question, when you make clothes for a model(human) do you make it as a seperate object or not? (I made clothes separate to the model and is wondering how to bone/skin it)

(->attach to model---just a thought)
please point me in the right direction

As to the first question, the answer is objective, it all depends on who you ask.

As for the second one, I woundn't.

Am I a butterfly dreaming I'm a man?
Or a bowling ball dreaming I'm a plate of samishi?

Yeah the high/low poly thing is totally subjective depending on the target system and people will argue about it 'till the end of time

But waste not your poly's and you'll not want for speed

It's definitely easier to change clothes during a game if you use a texture for them and make your model look like it's got clothes on in the mesh, that's the 'traditional' way but there are really no rules.

what about the models diferences like when you get a skirt or pants you can't change the texture to suit that(thats where I am). But that is a good idea, I'll use it later on. Thanks

Well, it really depends on how many sets of clothes you want to have. Most games I've seen, they used a completely different model for each different set of clothes (minus the head in some cases). You are going to have a lot of clothes I recommend you make a basic set for each type you need and texture those differently (thank god the edit button works).

For example you have a character creation set up where you can choose the kinda shirt your character will have. Lets say you want to have around 30 different shirts, well these will fall into 6 basic catogories: short sleaved, long sleaved, long sleaved with the sleaves rolled up, dress shirt, dress shirt with sleaves rooled up, and sleaveless. Just make 6 different models and texture them acordingly.

The only time I would model seperate clothing for models to wear would be if you wanted to show them putting on that clothing, and even then I would switch it with one that was modeled with it already on afterwards, to reduce polygons. I hope that helps.

To me:

Primitive Model Up to 50
Low Polygon Model Up to 500
Medium Polygon Model Around 1000-2500 depending on game design
High Polygon Model Anything too high polygon to use (causes slowdown when it is used as it was designed to be used) or too many polys for the effect that it achieves. I could make a 64 polygon object that was high poly - if all I was doing was to make a cube - I would term this 'a high polygon cube', almost all models available for download on the internet are classified high polygon by this definition aswell as the DarkBASIC built in sphere (I use a geo-mesh with less than half the polys and looks smoother).
