As for the modelling, I would suggest getting Milkshape 3D. Its only $20 US... Thats what I use.

If you are using DBC:
I really have no idea what for you to do.

Also another useful 3d modeling program, good for primitaves and shapes is Wings 3d

good for protyping objects and doing some "material" work. I am still trying to get used to Caligaries game space tools, having a heck of a time learning to use it, it's a big program. I more than likely use wings3d to do some work and skin the rest in gamespace.
