What is the best free 3D modeller? I am looking for something that can do low poly people and can do animation that can be used in DarkBasic Classic and can export to either .3ds or .x. Since I need the 'game' animation, Anim8or and Blender are out. Milkshape was pretty good but you have to pay to register it.

Oh, and please nothing that will screw up my computer .

Ouch, just hope RPGamer doesn't see that bit, as he put all that effort into the sticky title 'please don't ask whats the best 3D modeller' and tries to make it as eye catching as possible.

The question you are asking is down to opinion, its like whats the best Chinese resturant in cambridge, we all have our opinions, some will prefer others, yet there will be those more popular.

None should screw up your PC, however you should always make sure you're PC is compatible with minimal requirements, as with any game or program, check the processor/cpu, graphics card/VRAM, ram and OS, if you fall below one of them it may cause you problems, like when I bought GTA 3 for my old PC, didn't work because it needed at least 16mb Gfx.

Finally, free apps I recommend are

Animator - good modeller, good for animating to .avi, but you cannot export the model as an animation for use in DBP/DBC

Blender - Hard to get your head around, but its probaly the most powerful free app, but is a beast to learn

Wings3D- Great for modelling

TrueSpace 3.2 - Its a lot like the newer trueSpaces (not like 7 though) it has some nifty features, lacks bone animation, good physics, I found it felt a little old skool, but its a cool package, and for free its quite nice once you work it out

PiXel Vision- I'm just kidding,

Alright, thanks alot. I didn't mean best I guess. Just what a good one is. And is blender capable making people(I guess everyone can do that),animating the model, saving the animation with the model file for use in DBC/DBP?

I don't think its possible to export blender's animation to DBPro, you will need a separate program for animation. But then, it doesn't really matter since blender is free in the first place.
Blender can however export static uv mapped models to dbpro quite easily.

Learn blender so you wont kick yourself in the face later for doing something the hard way that you couldve done with the press of a button in blender ie. removing double verts... try doing that in milkshape . then uv map your model and export it, then load it into characterFX for animation and rigging to a skeleton.

Best free 3d modelling program? Blender by far. Hands down beats anything else that is free.

Check out this site for a Blender export utility for DirectX models with animation.
