alright, ive recently got 3ds max 8, its f***ing amazing, anyway, i want to get used to the hair and fur controls, there amazing to, the amount of control and options, but the trouble is i cant get it just over one area of my model, it covers the whole thing, ive tried selecting the area i want, grouping the area i want, grouping the area and hiding everything else, it still just covers everything.
ive looked over a few tutorials but i cant see where any of them address that specific problem, i kno it is going to be a dead simple answer, but it aint simple if you dont kno yet.
cheers!

havent tried it in a while, but if selecting faces then running the hair/fur modifier doesnt work then select the faces and hit detatch, then select your detached faces then use the modifier.

Halowed are the ori.

3ds max 8 should come with plenty of tutorials that will guide you step by step on how to do something. and if those arent sufficent then you could email autodesk. you could also check out www.pixel2life.com see if they have any tutorials for you. sorry i dont know but i dont have 3ds max 8. and i didnt have enough time in the trial to work out the hair. but if you find out it be great if you shared just in case i get it.

check out the demo videos, not exactly tutorials but they do show the basics of the different functions like hair, clothing, etc...

for your specific problem, need more information to help... email me the model in .max format and tell me where you are having the problems and I will try and work it out for you when I get back from my appointments...

basically, you need to use the "mesh select" modifier on your object, use that to select the face(s) you need, then apply the hair/fur modifier to the stack

I don't have a sig, live with it.

ok, i followed what you said, but still no luck, though im not to sure what you mean by "stack", (i am a 3ds max noob).

at heckno, thanx, i will just see if i can sort it out a little bit longer though, i always like to do all the work myself, on models or programming, if i send it off to have whats needed done, it takes the "my model" from it if ya know what i mean.
but i am struggleing at this, so i might make an exeption, cheers, thats very good of ya!

Bob, it was more of a "give me the model so I can do it only to tell you how to do it" type of deal....

I havn't had any problems getting the hair and fur on selected faces, but because i have only been using max since last nov im also a newb and sometimes need to go through the motions to help me explain to other users...

was gonna do maybe screenshots of how I did it, instead of trying to write the whole thing up...

good luck

you could also do it with splines, that way your hair is seperate and you have lots more control over the shape and dynamics of it, just place a couple of splines in the shape and style you want the hair, then attach all the splines together, then add a hair and fur modifier, you can either continue shaping them in the hair modifier or go back to spline sub selection and tweak...
