I have started on it, and I had the upper body and part of the lower body done, but I dont think that it'd be very good, so I decided to start over on the modelling. I use Anim8or, and what I'm really asking is all about Reference Imaging. I heard people talking about it, and I know how to do it, but I don't know the ammount of detail that should go into a reference image. Could someone give me an example of a reference image so that I know how much detail should go into one?

A referance image should contain the amount of detail you yourself can handle, some use cartoon like drawings because you have black lines to define where everything goes, some use blueprints (like for cars) and some use photographs, I have tried all of those three, to me I'd say having a cartoon like drawing is easier for organics, and blueprints for anything precise, photographs are for getting the detail into your model, however many people do use a front and side view of the photographs. Thats another thing, referance images should display the front and side views (top, bottom or/and back if necessary)

Don't ask, I just have to put my friends duck in my sig

Ok, I think I get it now. So, basically, I should just draw a picture of what I think I can handle, scan it, and use it?

yeah, basically, i'd keep your reference simple and limited to line work, you can always put more detail in later. its also good to have a concept image, that does have all of the detail you need on it

I don't have a sig, live with it.

also, if your gonna be creating people/creature type models it never hurts to use real pictures as reference for anatomy and such...

I did a wolf a while back and as a ref image i found a side view of a wolf off the internet to get the proportions of the animal as correct as possible...

However if your style is other than true, then it still doesn't hurt to start correct and deform from there...
