I am having problems with DBPro - among other things getting support and trying to follow ill-written instructions on this site, however ...

The problems:

1. Can't run the program unless the cd is in the drive (I need the drive for other things!!)

2. Can't run the setup to see if there is anything I can do about it!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".

So how can I get my money back???!!!!!

1. Can't run the program unless the cd is in the drive (I need the drive for other things!!)

the cd is copy ptrotected and therefore should ask you for it every 100 compiles.

The more information you provide about your system and problems will only help you solve your issues.

you may want to get the dongle if u use your cd a lot.

2. Can't run the setup to see if there is anything I can do about it!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".

It sounds like DB is open when your trying to uninstall it.
Can you see the menu that pops up?
Have u tried the repair feature ont he first page of the installer?.

So how can I get my money back???!!!!!
contact a sales team rep like Rick if your that unimpressed
[email protected]

If you provide more info ppl can help you.

What operating system and PC specs do u have along with video card?.

It sounds like your ready to dump it fast without trying properly but thats just my obsvervation

"among other things getting support"

Have you actually emailed us a support question? I have one email from you which arrived about half an hour after you posted a message here - not a great deal of time to respond!

"and trying to follow ill-written instructions"

Such as?

If you want a refund it depends how you ordered, but my reply to you explains this.

Heh, if your talking about the DBPro documentation, it couldnt be better.

Read it all 2 or 3 times and you will be a DBPro master

Eponick, problem is.. I think it takes someone with over a 95 IQ to truely comprehend DBP.

Granted some stuff does seems under explained. And the manual is almost pointless because the online help is so great. I'd have to say that it is the best online help I have ever seen. Since its very straight forward and easy to navigate through. I also like the way they ordered everything, its easy for me to find stuff. DBP was by far the best 100 bucks I ever spent. I'm having a lot of fun with it, and its just the beginning.

Bobvila.com made me take off my avatar! (dunno how they found out)

I think the documentation is lacking. Yes it says what each command does but sometimes you need to see it in context (tutorials) to figure it out. Either that or you play with it for ages in order to figure it out but that shouldn't be the solution. And don't tell me the accompanying code examples do this as they're about as much use as the UN.

The manual is good as a reference tool but not a great learning aid.

The recent 80 page tutorials are greatly welcomed. Good tutorials are the best way to learn - well ok maybe for those of us not blessed with a 5,000 IQ or whatever those amazing people are bragging of having.

I actually find that BOTH the manuel and the online help are a great, well, help. You see, I use the manuel or the online help in order of convienence. When I program, I follow a pattern. I NEVER jest open DBPro and start typing. Everything is done on paper first. When I am in 'paper' mode, I use the manuel, because I am not always floating around my computer when I am programming. I use the online help when I need to see an example of a command. And BTW, when it comes to programming, I am a like a "plan ahead" chess player. Meaning, that I decide what I want done, then I find the appropriate command to get it accomplished. Oh, and all of my images, objects, sounds, etc. come last. All I have to do is refer to my code on paper and 'fill in the blanks'. I find that the easiest way.

Dr Occult = "the documentation could be a lot better have you tryed to read the bit on 3DMATHS? but to say that all the BASIC stuf is well do`n."

I'd half agree with this - you see the manual is more of a command reference than a manual. In other words it tells you what the command is, how to use it and that's it (like most typical references). There is a world of difference between understanding how to use a command and understanding what it actually does. In my mind the short coming of the 3D Math area for example is that you get no indication as to how to use the commands (i.e. in what context) if you've never encountered them before. If you do know what a catmullrom is for example then the reference is just fine. What you're expecting is for it to teach you about the commands - but it doesn't. This is an issue we're addressing at the moment, but isn't really a failing of the reference, more of the expectations of it.

Cheers,

Rich

Have you stopped any running programs that have .TMP on the end/deleted everything in the temporary directory (and it can be in two places in XP) - as it sounds like a temporary file is in use or cancelled as may running tasks as possible ?

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

I had the same problem when I wanted to uninstall DBPro then reinstall it. It kept telling me that DBPro was still running even after I had restarted my computer. It turned out that when I went into C:\\Program Files and deleted the Dark Basic folder, it stopped telling me that the program was still running and let me uninstall it normally from there.

Kindley - You are running launch.exe to start the editor, you should run editor.exe instead, from DarkBasicFolder\Editor\Editor.exe

then you will only need the CD once every 100 compiles.

about the online reference..

is it just me, or was the DB classic help better ?

I found that on classic, you could open an example from the help for a partiular command

but on DBP, I cant find that, and I thought the DBC version was VERY good.

or maybe its just me, expecting too much too soon ( I only got DBP less than a week! )

I had the same problem about the program asking for the CD all the time, it's easily fixed if you change the dbpro shortcut to run the editor.exe file in the editor sub folder rather than running launch.exe (rt click and use properties/find target to change) DB pro will then only ask you once every 100 uses or so.

Hope this helps (Someone helped me before with this so no credit to me at all!)
