Hey - so we're a day earlier than planned?! But the weather is nice, DBDN reports have been good and we don't need to hold this off any longer.

You can now download Patch4.

Grrr... Patch 4 Final takes 8FPS off from Patch 4 Beta 1 - oh nevermind.

I had to find a lot of the workarounds I had used and scrap them so that my game worked OK, but apart from that no problems.

The biggest improvement is the extremely fast loading speed, I can now do away with a loading screen

Hmm... one slightly strange (bug?) though - whenever I run a P4 app - an image from the last DarkBASIC Pro app that I ran appears very briefly in the Window of the P4 app that I am currently running (ie. 200ms after startup, then dissappears). Weird.

@EdzUp - You are going to need a serious amount of recoding

Unfortunately the compiler is either showing completely the wrong problem or getting the line completely wrong - so fixing the existing one is going to be nigh-on impossible

Also, I read somewhere about DBPro "choking" if a program has more than 96-odd functions, which yours does, I don't know if this will cause problems or not.

Well, so far so good, one of my test programs is now 12x faster than before
One thing I have to remember now is the parameters for Clone Object have been switched back to the way they are written in the manual.

"One of my programs has jumped from 150 to 100 FPS i do`t now why all the over programs are going faster?"

Honestly - Don't you people pay any attention - Patch 4 IMPROVES THE ENGINE'S ABILITY TO COPE WITH LOTS OF OBJECTSs - Games which have little on screen and hence already have a high FPS (ie. 80+) will not see any speed increases at all. The programs affected are those getting 40FPS or less due to the aforementioned shortcomings of the old pipeline.

admiral_flyer_dude: Maybe it work perfectly for you but my framerate drop dramaticly, there are no more light affecting ground/walls/ceiling, some object behind ghosted object now apear in front of them, and all this $#!t only appear in my compo project AFTER I installed the new patch... aint that strange.

Maybe it does allow you to cope with more objects on the screen but when loading 200 cubes, it went faster with 3.1.

I'm getting a huge rendering lag (2-3 seconds) when running in full-screen exclusive mode, although fps() shows 225. No problems so far with the full-screen windowed mode :-s .

Are any code alterations required to adapt existing code for patch 4?

Full screen exclusive is always slower that window. However, in DX9 you can modify the refresh rate so the speed is equal to that of window mode - hopefully they'll hurry up and implement DX9 things soon.

Well, the full screen exclusive mode execution was fine with patch 3.1, though a lot slower.

I find the image quality somewhat sharper and of better quality in full screen exclusive mode, that's why I would like get this mode to work once again.

Looks like the "sync rate 0" was causing the problem. Now that I've set "sync rate 60" the lag misteriously disappeared!

I was able to correct must problem I had with the patch =). Most of them where cause by workaround I had to do in patch3. The only one that still give me headach is with the change mesh command. It seem to be slower than in 1.031 =(. I'll have to use boned animation for my models. Quite a job to do and not much time left until the end of the compo...

Rob K: I hope your wrong if it can handle only 96 functions then I will code it in something else .

I know the original SF2000 doesnt work in DBPro but I had hoped they would have fixed the problems that forced me to abandon the original source, one of which was the 16,000 error problem and the function count.

I didn't see flight rotation commands in the bug fixes. Excuse the sarcasm, but we can now make kick-ass games with lots of models, but we can't rotated anything in the z-axis? Very useful indeed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy we have a new engine that runs much faster. I came into uni real early this morning to grab the download to try out tonight. But I'm still staggered that "free flight rotation" bug fixes were nowhere near the top of the to-do list.

All these goodies without free-flight rotation is like a room full of tinned food and no tin opener - almost useless.

I'm grateful for this upgrade, I really am. I'm banking on the fact that I missed the free flight rotation bug fix in the patch info, because otherwise all the acceleration in the world is totally useless to me.

@EdzUp: Completly right... I said the same stuff months ago, after release of Patch 2. Lucky me, our project still works right and the exe size was now reduced from 8.0 to 7.1 Mb with Patch 4.

I think you will find that the patch has thrown up very few PATCH related problems. There were a few issues that were known about but not worth delaying the patch further for.

Remember that this patch wasn't a major bug fixing patch but a new performance enhancing patch. Patch 5 will target any outstanding issues.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

[edit-]
don't post comments trying to help cause i know why i won't install, i figured something like this would happen - but i can't find the CD to reinstally Pro, sitting in a box in a garage and i'm too lazy to sort through all of it just for a patch lol

Even those of us with Patch 4 don't have access to info on the DBO specification. The updated help files don't contain any mention of the DBO format.

Hopefully that information will be coming in P5

As for not finding the DBPro installation, I had that with one of my machines - the reason being I had done a re-installation of Windows XP (due to IE not working properly), and I didn't re-install DBPro afterwards (even though it ran fine). Basically it means it cant find the DBPro information in the registry.
