Make sure the material is applied to the sphere. Make sure the viewport is in textured mode. Make sure the texture is an "image" texture and not a cloud texture ect. That option can be found on the dropdown menu in the texture panel on the buttons window. thers a little dropdown menu that has all different kinds of textures, one of them is an "image" style texture. look around for it in the texture panel.

When you press cntrl + lmb in edit mode it should add in another vert from the selected one. This way you can 'trace' an image by control clicking and adding verts. Personally I prefer just to extrude the vert, which achieves the same effect.

I think youve read it wrong mate. It isnt "ctrl - imb", its "ctrl-LMB(left mouse button)"

Hope that helps

First of all ur in edit mode. Second, you won't see the texture until you either render the image, or go to textured face mode.

I don't really understand your problem. Are you saying that you can't unwrap the face without distorting the proportion of it? Remember that you can always move individual vertices in the UV window to make things less stretched. Just place the image you want in the UV window and move the verts until its not distorted.

Sorry that no one answered your question but you need to be a little clearer, for all I know I just spent a while answering something you didn't ask.
