How to Make an Mpeg Movie
A Wehtam Guide
One way of looking at mpeg is by saying, mpeg is to movie files what jpeg is to picture files. It's a compression standard which reduces the file size of your movie for use in multimedia projects.
The quality does suffer when compressing in mpeg, but the distortion isn't as bad as many.
Your first step is to create your AVI file, a common recording/source format. This will later be converted to mpeg for use in Game Cover.
Ask yourself what you want your intro movie to be. If you want it to be some grainy, black and white horror footage, a camera/camcorder will do just fine. Any "Real" footage should be obtained via camera/camcorder/webcam. If you fancy a bit of Digital 3D ( like the example movie ) you will need a 3d modelling program that outputs animation to video ( the majority do this ), your only enemy here is the price! But there are plenty of cheap alternatives that can animate just text.
You can also compile a movie from still images and narration text, this is the most straightforward option. With all of these techniques in mind you still need one other item, a video editing program.
Your video editing program will cut/crop/convert you movie to the final mpeg version ( hopefully ). Even Windows Movie Maker ( for XP owners ) can cut and edit video, along with adding a few transitions. You need to export your movie as an mpeg, or export as an AVI and then convert to mpeg later.
640 x 480 is plenty big enough for most movies. Game Cover will stretch the movie to fill the screen.
Here are links to animation programs, I have not tried all of these so do not presume they are good:
TrueSpace 3.2 ( Free )
Not 100% sure if this exports to movie, but it's a great resource in your 3d arsenal, did I mention it's free ?

Here are links to Movie editing programs, I have not tried all of these so do not presume they are good:
Windows Movie Maker !
Doesn't export to mpeg but it can do a lot with video.
Edit Studio
Won't set you back as much as the big boys, and it's mind numbingly powerful. A program for LIFE!

And finally, for those that can only export to AVI, you will need an mpeg converter. I could only find 1 free avi 2 mpeg program, i haven't tried it but apparently it does the job:
Advanced Video Converter 3
It's free, and does the job ( apparently ) give it a whirl! Let us know if it works.
