I have a blender file that I want to use in wings3d. Blender says it can export to .wings files but it doesnt work. I open the file and hit export and no wings files appears, whats wrong with it?

Try exporting the file as a 3DS file, then importing that into Wings.

When I try to import in wings it crashes and says to check a dump file. The file says:

Then theres something wrong between the two porters, they're coding the 3DS file differently. Thats common since there are lik 3 different but fairly similar 3DS Formats. If you'd like I can try getting the model into the standard 3ds format if you post it up for download here. Other than that my only suggested is to get a file converter and convert it to a new 3DS File yourself, but converters arent the easiest thing to find for free.

Thats strange... Anyways, I reconverted it, it works now.

Just a note, you realize that gun is inverted right?

What did you do, just import in wings? What do you mean by inverted?

I have Deep Exploration, it's one of the best file conversion tools around but it'll cost you. I just converted the 3DS File to a 3DS File, the Deep Exploration Converter found the problem and fixed it for the new file so it worked.

Inverted means that the normals are flipped, this is often used for rooms and buildings that only require detail on the inside. If you want to see what I mean, open up wings 3D, create a cube, and right click it > select invert. You'll see now you can see inside the cube instead of out, because the normals have been flipped.

Your gun model had it's normals flipped, so you could see through one side to another, not sure why this happened if you didnt do ti on purpose but just open it in wings, right click, and select invert.

I HIGHLY recommend getting Deep Exploration, it converts amlost any universal file type you can think of. And some you cant...

I looked for deep exploration and I think I found it, is it $150? Is there any cheaper ways to do this? I like blender but so far trying to bevel edges and the like has been a bitch.

Before you go buying a converter look around on the Blender forums for bugs in the exporting, because this seems weird that it'd corrupt the 3DS file like it did...

Then again I dont/havent used blender before, I use Wings 3D and 3DS Max so I cant be much help on the subject. All I can suggest is either do some searching to try and find a patch or some sort of answer, or start learning how to use Wings (its extremely simple to use).

Goodluck,

Wings seems easy enough to learn but I dont really like it. Can it make faces out of verticies or is everything based on shaping objects?

Everything is pretty much based on shaping/extrusions. Unless you're smart enough to figure out what faces you have to delete and connect to form a new object out of the left over "junk" vertices, its pretty much the old school method.

Then again, with a little practise...
