does anyone know how to do a hud message with a transparent background?
right now i use a midlevel grey background and of course it doesnt look as good as the transparent background the game uses.
anyone know how to do that?
the game messages in targa have a curious white grey checkerboard background that is not related to the message. it shows white all over when you try to pick the color.

I use Gimp 2 but you can use just about any paint program.
If you are using the Gimp you click on File and select New.
Pick the size of the image and click on OK.
Click on Layers at the top.Click on Add New Layer and then OK.
Open the layers dialog.I keep mine open but that is your choice.
Click on the background layer and then the trash can at the bottom.
Now you have a transparant layer.
Click on text and type whatever you want to display.
Save your image. You might want to save it as a .tga.
Hope this helps.

In answer to the question about the checkered background that is what a transparant layer looks like when you are not using it in the game.

i thank you very much for the info. i was using Ultimate Paint which makes targa file and CENTERS TEXT easily but doesnt handle layers.

Gimp is a cast iron bitch to use but it works. it wont center text and i needed to dicker around with the layers until i wound up with 2. one for the transparent background and one for the text itself. then i had to export it to targa mode.

again, thanks, cuz IT WORKS!
