Yes, I just followed the settings from the link above when exporting, and everything has turned out fine for me, I've never had a problem.
And I'm not sure about the advice that your model must be an editable mesh, not an editable poly...my scientist, zombie scientist, and Half-Life zombie were all exported in editable poly format with no problem...
But converting to editable mesh IS good practice when exporting to a game engine, so I'd say that is good advice.
But do whatever works for you. It seems like a lot of people are having all kinds of trouble exporting characters from the panda exporter, I'm not sure why...
