Instead of getting off topic in Rastaworlds thread, let's continue the discussion here.

Post by Warfare unlimited:
Quote: "Just finished a app which uses RastaMans Packer. It allows for a menu system to load and run compiled levels from within it. It won't load a single level from with a multiple level compile however. It is designed to work with unpacked FPSC games, Packed ones(I use FPSCPacker also!)or even 3DGS compiled levels."

Reply to that by me:
Quote: "Sounds good Warfare Unlimited, I'm working on a similair application also, but found that it isn't a the best solution around.

I've finished my game by now 14 levels. If I compile it all in to one exe the game is about 200Mb, packed a lot less. If I do build the 14 levels one by one, the game ends up being over 2Gb..... that's just not funny anymore."

Reply by Warfare Unlimited:
Quote: "Benjamin A,
With DVD's, 2 gig isn't an issue anymore. I always said 16k was plenty but times change!

I developed the app for our use but will probably release a freeware version(ad for us in it). A few piasters more will get your own logo and sound included in a customized embedded AVI that replaces our splash screen. "

I'll continue the discussion here......

I know, but I'm also realizing more and more that we see a shift from people buying downloadable games, instead of a hardcopy. It makes a lot of difference to tell potential customers the download is under 400Mb or the download is over 3Gb. A of people still have to take a deep very deep breath when it comes to downloading a game of over 2Gb.

As for DVD's, a lot of potential customers still only use CD-Rom players, think about kids using the second computer in the home which may not be as well equiped as the main one. Even though DVD plyers are well spread, lot's of people are still using CD-Rom only.

I really don't want to loose a good deal of my customer base by creating a game of over 2Gb...... It just doesn't sound good to me.

I'd love to hear others opinions on this..... use DVD or CD-Rom, what would be the maximum desired download size? Will 2Gb download scare people away? Will using DVD stop people from buying? Just feel free to chime in!

It would take 112 hours to download 2 GB, on a 5 kbs connection. It took me 14 hours to download 256 MB, so times that by 8 and you get 112 hours.

You would just have to keep your computer online. Play some offline games, do home work and the time will go past quite fast.

I'm not worried about dial up, but how about people with low speed adsl an such? They have unlimited bandwith, but will they download 2Gb. I myself am on a fast broadband connection, but still hesitate to download apps and games over 1Gb.

DVD or CD? If you've got dial up only the chances are that you do not own a pc with dvd.

Ben A, why are you not combinding media again? Even with compression you still are going to extract that 2Gig on the HD, but this time, you will need to do so everytime you run the game.

Don't worry, my game will not be 2gig at all, I'm just bringing up the scenario that will happen if the game is build into seperate levels. I've decided not to build into seperate levels, but will use a different approach.

I could of course combine all of the media again, but doing that for 14 game levels..... ouch, that's no fun at all.

Another download manager which works well is reget pro from

http://www.reget.com/ for all you dial up users..

If you were to provide a cd/dvd option make sure that the cd/dvd looks professional... there's nothing worse than ordering some software and it comes on an X-Logic (or whatever) cd with the title of the software written on in pen...

Damn!I was going to use a marker to write on the cd/r...maybe nail polish would be better...lol.
If I gave away the game on cd,which I plan on doing,I have to cover the time fo making the game, the cost of the cd and possibly postage, etc.
People just get the plain old cd.I might make a nice little thing to put in the cd sleeve or something.
Maybe I can stick some masking tape on the cd and write on it...
Please don't take some of what I said seriously...

If Your game really are good it dosnt matter if the size of the game is 2MB or 2GB! Most people today has combo-drivers (It reads dvd but dosnt write.) If Your game is good as Halflife2 I will buy it. Dosnt matter if I have to wait a few minutes more for that. (I have 25MB/s) The problem is that People here are trying to sell crapgames, that gives FPSC Games a bad reputation! By the way, with sutch a big game You just MUST have a demo for download! How courld Your game be so big? Maybe You shourld remove the X-files? It wourld make the game mutch smaller! FPSC are only using DBO anyway....
Good Luck!

I saw you give options. In a perfect scenario, your game will fit onto a CD, which would work for everyone. If it's too large, it will probably be too large a download for dial-up users.

I suggest you use a DVD if such is the case. I have never owned a computer that did not at least read DVDs, not in the past six years.

14 different games...

im assuming thats 14 exes and 14 file folders?

you can combine the media into a single folder, so there are no duplacates, then you can write an app which changes the name of each level and executes the same single exe, called FPSC-GAME.exe

its a VERY simple concept.

@ I has returned

Nail polish might just work... in fact if you individually paint each cd you could charge more by calling it limited edition and giving out numbered certificates...

Or if on top of paying mortgage/rent, groceries, home phone, mobile phone, electricity, gas, water, various taxes, car repayments, car insurance, home insurance etc... they don't have enough left over for braodband...

of course if you live at home and your parents pay for everything, you might not think of all that....
