An object is the visible, manipulatable entity inside the program (like a sphere). A mesh is the data required to create that object. Thats why when you create meshs from objects you can use that data to create a limb or other object.

Could you load an object from a .x file. Make a mesh of it. Send this mesh as data in a multiplayer game and the other person makes an object from this mesh?

In a word, yes, but making a mesh from an object loses all limb information for that object.
