DarkBASIC Professional Discussion / DBPro Patch4 tries to access the Internet?

My firewall says that programs compiled with my just updated to patch4 DBPro version, try to connect to the Internet.

I just open a DBPro example, press F5 and the firewall pops up saying that temp.exe is attempting to access the Internet.

It is at least annoying and I don't want to disconnect the firewall.

Anyone suffers the same?

Yet another plug for -- a search function would be nice, hint, yes I heard about the long work around with goggle search but thats just too annoying for me.

It's not the size of your code but how efficiently you use it!

That's only a temporary fix... Rick is working on a real search feature.

Anyway, my firewall isn't giving me any problems, which firewall and version of windows do you have?

I swear DB BETTER NOT be accessing the internet without my permission!

It's not. It is just initialising DirectPlay. If you have a firewall on your PC (like Norton) it can sometimes detect and report this.

There is a way to "disable" that annoying notification feature in Norton so that it does protect you but instead of bothering you every single time anything sends something out or gets something from the Internet, it won't pop up and tell you that. I got so annoyed with it making it so that things would time out or not letting things through that I just uninstalled it and activated the XP built-in firewall.

the way to stop it telling you is to turn of notification and autotracker...
however unfortunately i've noticed that the past 2 upgrades seems to have disabled the ability to send & receive data over messengers (god knows why) but no matter how you get them up they still can use it, just times out.
So i disabled it and i'm back on XP's builtin firewall too, made a quick program i've named Tripwire so i know when programs are accessing the net internally and externally.

It's interesting because i've not had any of the same Trojan warnings since Tripwire has been in play - perhaps i coded it wrong, but it warns me of everything else (doesn't stop anything, but is an early warning system which doesn't show up in the Task Mananger and such without having Admin permissions)

i dunno, Norton 2003 has been really jittery a beast for me...

Get Norton Antivirus Corporate edition.

I saw it once, It's really good!

Just a small icon on your taskbar, doesn't take up many resources too.

Oh ok, I should have known lol

[EDIT] Direct Play is initialized... shouldn't that only happen when there are multiplayer commands? I don't know anything about DX really though so don't think I'm challanging anyone lol

Well, I use Panda Platinum.
The fact is that it didn't happen before and now it happens all the time (after patch4?).
Also it seems to add a lag at the start of the application running.

Mmmm, maybe DirectPlay initialization is the thing, but as I said, it didn't happen before. Of course I can turn off the firewall option, and I hope that the lag dissapear.

Dont forget the DLL's will have been updated (time, date & size), which according to most firewalls, could constitute a 'problem'.

I'm using nortan internet securtiy 2003 and it never gives a popup message. Only a flashy thing in the tray. Very handy. And DB never accesses the internet here. By the way. The XP firewall isn't very good, so don't rely to much on that thing.

So, is there a way to tell DBPro to not init DirectPlay? Customers can get real jittery when their protection software warns them about this kind of thing, especially when they know the program is supposed to be a stand alone application.

Dont think so - every part of DX is initialised, I think. You would need to modify the firewall to make sure the message doesn't come up...

Gotcha, getting rid of the message on my machine is no problem. It's the user machines that concern me.

I guess I'll just include something in the Don't Panic section of the readme file.
