I've started writing shaders for my 3D models and am having an irritating problem using RenderMonkey (I've tried versions 1.5 and 1.6 and get the same problem with both).

The documentation says you can add texture variables (as well as bools, integers, etc), but when I right-click on an effect node and select Add Variable, all I get is a drop-down menu with the options

Boolean
Integer
Float
Matrix
Color

Similarly, I can't see how to add a sampler - yet the books and the RenderMonkey docs suggest this should be done from the menus. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful because RenderMonkey seems ideal in other respects.

Edit:
Well, what do you know? Booted up fresh this morning and Hey Presto! 99% of the problems disappeared! The documentation I was using doesn't quite match the RenderMonkey Editor interface - but at least I could get a simple textured model up and running without even looking at the manuals! Must be a lesson there somewhere ... "When all else fails, throw the ******* manual away!", perhaps?

Thanks for looking at my post anyway.
