Is it legal to make a game based off a movie? Can I just change names and stuff and make it legal? I'm thinking of making a Mission Impossible 3 game.

It depends on who you ask, and how much money you got.

Quick answer is-

If it is a FREE game, then they dont care, they may, depending on the content, but generally, they couldnt care less.

If you plan on releasing it commercially, then you cannot. You'd drown in court costs before you could even make a plea.

Go ahead and make the game if you want. Would you be infringing on trademarks and copyrights? Probably. Especially if you use their stuff. (music etc.)

But they (universal, disney) wont care. Unless you start selling it or slandering the company or its management or stockholders or something.

If its just fan fiction they would probably shrug it off.

If its great, who knows? you could get yourself a job.

Copywrite laws are pretty straightforward: if you dont make it,buy it, or pay someone to do it, it isnt yours. Period.

That means you cant even record or copy a bit of someone elses work.

You are allowed some leeway on the trademark bits especially if you are making a parody.

So if you were making "Mission Impossible 4: Converting everyone to scientology or Mission Impossible : Getting me to go to another stinker tom cruise movie after war of the worlds and 3:"

That would be ok.

Get it?
