A number of people do try to tell us that getting crosshairs into FPSC is tricky.... My goodness it's about the easiest thing to do. Let's no longer force you into depending on others for your crosshairs, but form now every one can his own cool custom crosshairs!

Here's how to do it:

First of all create your crosshair. Preferable, create a 64x64 image with a black (RGB 0,0,0) background. It must be black. Now create your crosshair on top of this. Once done, save the file as a 32bit .TGA file (TrueVision Targa Format) in the folder where you gun is located. The filename NEEDS to be crosshair.tga

All guns are located in the files/gamecore/guns folder. In that folder locate the gun which crosshair you want to change either your own created gun or an exsisting gun. Let's assume we're going to change the Scifi Vickers Gun it's crosshair.

In the files/gamecore/guns folder select the scifi folder and then the vickers folder and save the file crosshair.tga in that folder. You will notice a file called crosshair.dds in it also. Before you run FPSC, rename that file to something like original_crosshair.dds This MUST be done, because the engine uses the crosshair.dds in the game. Now run FPSC, pick the Vickers gun and voila a new crosshair will appear. If you go back to the vickers gun folder, you will notice the engine has created a new crosshair.dds file.

So in short, create a 64x64 image and save it as crosshair.tga in the gun folder. Locate the gun, all guns are (and custom guns must be) in a subfolder of the files/gamecore/guns folder. Now rename or delete the crosshair.dds file.

That's it. Imo making crosshairs is about the easiest things in FPSC.

Have fun doing it! Attached you're find a sample crosshair to help you on your way

Another easy way for creating a Crosshair: (For those that only have Paint, and no very expensive tool )

Programs needed: Paint, DXTBmp (Google for it)

Create your crosshair in colors, and save it as "whateveryoulike.jpg" then edit the crosshair, and make the background black, and the crosshair (The parts you want to see) white, then save as "whateveryoulike.bmp".

Then go to DXTBmp, and open your "whateveryoulike.jpg" thats your crosshair... Now go to Alpha>Import Alpha Channel. Select your "whateveryoulike.BMP" (it has to be BMP), and press OK, now you have your crosshair!

One last step to follow:

Choose Save As, and then save as DDS Texture, then you have 2 options: "Name" And "save as" now DONT choose DDS DXT1 (NOALPHA)
but instead choose DDS DXT1 ...

There you have your crossie

No problemo, and yes it is a handy tool. (I found it when doing some research on how to open a .dds file )

Also handy, just to view .DDS is Irfanview 3.98, and a program called "Executeable File Icons Changer"

I would buy AE's crosshair pack anyway. It's reasonably priced...dirt cheap,actually...and I am happy with the variety and design of the crosshairs.
While I will continue to make my own as well this gives me a good selection of high quality crosshairs and I save myself the time of having to make one.Plus if I ma in the middle of doing something I don't have to worry about forgetting about it while I stop to make one.

AE it's not just about you. It's been requested a lot of times and all you ( and some others ) can tell people how hard or tricky it is achieve.

That is imo quite irritating when it isn't hard to do at all. Why deliberately keep people ingnorant, telling them something that isn't true, just because you want to make a few more sales?

Sorry I can't stand that, because I knwo it's very very easy to do.

So these two things combined, the recent request and comments made by a number of people, made me decide to write this small tutorial.

At times it seems like some of the 'merchants' around here try to deliberaly tell people how hard something is or how they can't live without their product, while in fact the users could do it themselves very easily.

Sorry, I just don't like that and whenever I can, I will try to set the record straight.

While I agree, I am sure that this was not what AE was doing or thinking. What he is offering for the price is, well as I Has Returned said, well worth the money in time saved alone.

Again, I know you were not aiming that at AE directly, but I just wanted to make that clear.

AE - I really don't think this was directed at you. Your post clearly states that your pack is for people who just don't want to take the time to create their own. You did a great job of showing people exactly what they were getting for their money with your video.

Benjamin A - Good tutorial for the folks that do want to create their own and did not know how.

I have returned - Thanks, I too now know what "imo" means.

Making crosshairs is work to make them, then to get them all in folders and stuff, it's not THAT easy.

Black Terror, my tutorial shows how easy it is, how can you say it's not that easy? I just can't believe a remarks like that..... even when the proof of how easy it is, has been given already.

If someone finds this hard, then I suggest getting a basic course in computer usage. There you get thought how to use folders and even how ot make simple drawings and that's all you need for creating crosshairs.

Good point.

How many posts have you seen by people asking:

Where do I put the files after I download them?
How do I take a screenshot?
Where do I put the script?
etc, etc, etc.

A program that either does all the work and puts the files where they belong or explicitly explains the proceedure step-by-step is the only way some of the users will ever get the content to work.

That's one of the reasons I started using Install Creator. It puts the files where they are supposed to be.Before I would make the files and they just had to be copied to the entitybank folder, for instance.
I saw there are those who had trouble with that so the install creator does it for them.
However,if you do it that way and make files for a weapon then you would have to make an install for the gun and one for the entity bank.
Maybe someone ought to do a tutorial for copy/paste,etc. to explain where the files go,etc.
What seems simple to me maybe be extremely complex to someone who doesn't know.

I have pointed out before that even if someone does make something,in this instance, crooshairs available to the community free and someone makes a crosshair pack and wants a reasonable price for it people will still buy it.I did for three reasons.
1. I want to have as much media as I possibly can to make my games.
2. If I am in the middle of something I do not want to stop and take the time to make a crosshair.I am not lazy.I just want to concentrate on what I am doing.
3. I want to support my community.

Making a crosshair in and of itself is a simple process.Making one that looks good is a different story.

hey avenging eagle, man its all good, your its not about WHO and HOW the crosshairs are put in, its all about WHAT the crosshairs look like and there designs. I frankly really like your designs for the croshiars.

so theres no probs just make sure your crosshairs look really cool and people will buy them because they know thay cant make them there sevles. Atleast some people cant.

He doesn't need to make a tutorial, all you need to do is read the first post very carefull again. You bitmap is way to large, you need a 64x64 pixels bitmap and place the crosshair in it. Look at my example crosshair and create yours the same size.
