Music is a field that can be tough.

You need a good program to get good results--cheap programs usually have little functionality and the really shows in the final product, unlike--say, modelling--where even though a cheaper program like Milkshape will have less functionality than 3DS Max, it can usually get the job down.

And, of course, expertise is another factor--you can't just "whip up" a masterpiece. If you have a Mac, GarageBand is an excellent choice because of ease of use.

If you wanted to go deeper into the flexibility, there are numerous choices like I Has Returned said.

Of course, if sounding good isn't a priority, things like Anvil Studio are simple and fairly easy, although the output sound is fairly bad.

I'd suggest trying FruityLoops, the demo allows you to do most things except for save, you can't save your work but you can export the MP3, meaning you'd have to make your tune in one sitting.

It's workable, and probably quite an easy route to take - it depends on how much control you want over the music. I find soundtrackers can give better control than FL style loops, there's dozens of free soundtrackers and resources, Modplug for instance.

Well, I suggest Magix Music Maker 2006, really good for making music... But you have to pay for it... Google for it and try the demo/trial.

Yep, I use Acid Music as well. Great program. You can sample your own wave loops or use existing ones and manupulate them in tracks to make music.

Id say Magix and Ejay are a good introduction to music, with garageband and fruityloops being a step up. I personally use Reason and cooledit. The wealth of plugins for these higher-end production programs means you can get much better effects etc.

But I agree with jiffy, I've been makin beats for 4 years and playing instruments for 15 years, and it's not really the program that dictates how good you'll be, it's you. It wont matter if you spend £500 and buy ProTools, if you have no musical ability, it'll still be rubbish!

yes, it does allow everything, BUT, if you are going to make comercial music, you have to buy it, for beginners, FruityLoops Fruity Edition is the best, you have to buy some synths seperately but it comes with all of the basic ones, 3xOsc, Ts404, Slayer, BooBass, And some others, if you want a good synth, i would recomend http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARACS80V - CS-80, a great softsynth.

Ok, i think it would be best to buy Fruityloops Fruity edition, because then you get Access to all of the Video tutorials on www.flstudio.com and they explain all the basics to get you started on making music. And it Grants you Access to www.samplefusion.com A large collection of sounds.

Fruityloops Can make ALL types of music, some people say it is only good for Rap Or Electronia, they are wrong, You can make music of all genres. if you are thinking of buying fruityloops, then buy fruity edition because the express edition SUCKS, and if you want, i can give you 10% discount of it because i have bought fruity from them in the past

and also, if you buy it, it gives you access to a chat program called Collab, There you can chat about fruity loops or anything you want you can also make songs with people.

Just google pallmanni and get the history of me!

Magix Music Maker and Ejay are cool.

Please not that you cannot use Ejay for any commercial use at all. So if you're planning on selling your game (or the music) don't get Ejay.

Magix Music Maker allows usage for commercial use, that also count for all of the sounds loops they've included. Magix Music Maker used to be royalty free for any usage, but for a few years they had a commercial license enforced, but due to many complaints and sales drops, they quickly dropped the license again.

FPSnut - your post was on approval status, so basically we have to approve your posts before they'll be visible to humans. It's just a safety measure, I don't think it lasts too long these days.

I would sudjest buying a keyboard... and playing. Everyone has the ability to hit a piano and make music, they just don't know it... find sounds you like, and repeat them.

I have the ability to randomly compose depressing music... I wonder how that would be in game?
