I've been trying to write a program to create an icon from a bitmap, but I just can't get it to work. Is there any code that does this? It would be really useful. Or just some code that can write an ico file?

Nope...

Search msdn for the .ico file syntax. Maybe (if you understand how it is built up), you can write a function for it...

I've done it! I found out what you have to do you have to put about 300 0's on the end! Here's some code that makes an icon with random black, white, or transparent pixels

I'm just editing it so that you can put an image in

make a bitmap (icon.bmp)

its the simplest way

I can't believe I didn't try that!
Anyway, is there a way to insert the icon into the executable, with only free stuff?

You can use a program I use called "XE Resource Editor" that can be downloaded for free. Find it my searching it on Google. And, I use the program POPICO for changing bmp to ico (i have a Windows98 and it doesn't allow changing the extensions so easy)

I have windows98, and it lets me change the extension and still work . Also, that resource editor stops my programs from working
