Sorry if this is the wrong forum, just move it if thats the case.

I found this great little app on the internet:

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~kand/caustics/

It generates animated "caustics", the refelections of light you see at the bottom of a pool say. However, the generated images can also be used as water surface textures, so if you need some water check it out. It's free, even for use in commercial apps, as long as you credit them!

played with it a little bit. any idea how to load into a game. i'm sure you have to use the dll that comes with it somehow but i'm quite new at this stuff.

Actually it exports an animation with images. IE- if you ask for a 32 frame
animation it will spit out 32 images, which you string together to create an animation. If you are using a matrix as your water, you would put these frames into one single texture, in this case a texture with 32 tiles, 8x8, then prepare the matrix texture accordingly, and while in game, cycle through the textures. Simple

I like this program! I'm going to use rapscallion's suggestion of using a matrix and altering tile textures every X frames or whatever. Best to use matrix as you can do some sin maths to make water go up and down in a wavy fashion.

could you give us an example of using the trig functions to make the water wavy?

oh, and can i use ms paint to make a texture using those tiles? and how? i don't have paint shop or anything like that.

Hey Chief,

I think the idea was to tile the images inside of DBPro. It's probably as easy as setting a flag. But modifying the texture to flip every so often may not be as simple.

It's a good idea, just not done in a paint program.

I... think you missed the point.

The program outputs images. You take those images into photoshop, paintshop, gimp or plain old ms paint and arrange them in a grid like fashion. If you knew anything about how matricies work in DBP you'd know what I'm talking about. Then you just switch the texture every frame or so to create the animated effect.

And no, I have no water wavy code that I can share sry.

I missed the point? Oh well, won't be the last time I do that.

I think you can also get caustics in the texture maker program that DBS is selling too. This is already tileable. You may be able to flip it too but I'm uncertain at this point. I'll be learning darktree soon which I'm pretty sure will do the caustics and tileable flipping.

But of course you could always do it by hand in a paint program if you want to do it that way too.

Good luck however you decide to make it work.

First: The generated caustic images are already perfectly tileable
Second: Why would you flip the images?
Third: I hope you weren't insulted when I said you missed the point, because that wasn't the purpose

first: Alright, I'm not using the programs that you're using so I can only assume what it does.

second: You flip an image as a way to try and introduce more variety into the object being tiled without creating too much memory overhead or system drain because of moving larger amounts of data at any one time.

third: I'm not insulted at all rapscaLLion. I only really get upset when people are rude and obnoxious to me to begin with. You were non of the above. So you're a-ok in my book.

I have to admit, I'm not focussing a whole heck of a lot on DBPro right now. I like to check the forums to see whats going on in the community. I may be developing with it in the future. But as of now, I'm working with other development software. So I'm not suprised if I don't understand what the point is at times. I'm glad you know what you're talking about.

Ben

Not such a bad little program, but Texture Maker does it better (Generator -> Caustics) and outputs images or AVI. At least this one is free I guess.

Cheers,

@BHoltzman: I see what your getting at... variety is important I suppose, but could you not just mix the tiles you put on the matrix? I suppose you can't mix and match though because it'll create seams...

@Rich: lol, that's a plug for sure

Yeah, I'm thinking of ways to avoid the seams.
