As DBC is an older program which doesn't support bone animation, these kind of animation programs will do little for me as I want to make animated objects for DBC.
I've also understood that the built-in commands that are used for creating animated objects isn't as smooth as it could be, nor easy to use.

I'm wondering, is there a program, preferably free, that is capable to animate models as Anim8or does; and of course is able to export them into .X or .3ds-files?

Thanks!

Well Milkshape is what a lot of people use. I find it harder to model with than Anim8or. I think that Character FX also doe this, but I am not shure.

I thought Milkshape only supportet bone animation. So it is capable of animating objects to DBC? Wohoo! Thanks!

I've got a little question when it comes to assigning objects to the skeleton in order to make an animation:

I read this tutorial
http://www.josh.ch/joshch/tutorials/milkshape,modelling-assign-mesh-skeleton.html
and it explained how to assign verices to the skeleton; not how to assign objects. Well, I thought that by selecting "group" instead of "vertex" would do it. But no, after I've assigned the 'group' to the skeleton it is unassigned by itself when I click on another joint, group or just unarking the group or joint.

How should I do in order to make every object succesfully be assigned to the skeleton?

I guess this'll explain what I mean by group; I would like the hand to be assigned to the bone that I've given the name "hand".

How about Truespace 3.2 (google it) its old, therefore free, but it makes use of Limb animation, no skeleton though but you move the limbs them selves, just as Dark Matter was animated (except they were done in TrueSpace 4, I think)

Unfortunately the Caligari website does not contain TS 3.2, but there are several websites you can find through google...If all else fails go retro with the first version of Truespace here;

Thanks! I found it rapidly on Download.com, the 3.2 version. Sounds promising, especially with the 1.2 Mb tutorials included. Thank so much for the tip!

no problem, I found it quite useful, at the start it will look confusing, but you have the tutorials there to help and little bit of practice will go a long way.

Since Milkshape had an easier interface, I'm currently using it. But if this question isn't answered, I might skip to Truespace.

Now when I've made an animation in Milkshape, how should I do in order to make DBC capable of playing it? If I save it as an .X-fil with the standard settings, DBC can't play it. The model just stands as it did in the forst frame.

There are two .X exporters for milkshape. Only one of them works properly. I don't use Milkshape, but I think it's called JT x exporter or something like that.

"DirectX (JT)"? Is that the one you're talking about?

Sadly enough, it doesn't appear to work. Could it be some of the settings in the window that appear?

Simple used to explain how to do this, but he left the site years ago. You should try searching for the explenation. I think it did have something to do with those boxes. Van B might know.

Ok, I searched in the older topics and I found this image. I'm not sure if it's ment to be used with DBC though. The problem I'm having right now is the following:
When writing the command "Play object 1", the object suddenly dissapear, and that's a bit odd, don't you think?
