I realize that performance is based on many different variables not just poly count, but can anyone give me a rough guideline for how many polys should be limited to. My guess for a scene including characters, map, etc would be 25,000. Is that too much? or can average computers handle more, like 100,000? I know there's no solid answer to this, but can anyone help anyways? If not, does anyone know of any examples of games and their poly counts? Thanks.

25,000 is a good aim for an unoptimized engine in DBP. With that you can probably easily get 60 fps on most machines with objects animated and lots of textures, shaders, and other effects. I don't think any of my games have exceeded 5,000, but I haven't built any huge games.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.
