If you want cheap and decent 3D modelling, try some of the following
Milkshape - Excellent for games, modelling + animation + good range of export and import options
Lithunwrap - For UVMapping (free) UVmapping is setting how a texture will be layed out on the model, you can also export a 2D version of your model as a template to paint your textures on, then apply them in MS3D
Gimp - Free power 2D tool, good for making those textures
I would follow tutorials to get the whole concept in your head and how to do things, it will take a lot of practice to get good models, you can demand good models based on applications (unless they are premade models) it takes a little elbow grease for good results
