3 Dimensional Chat / 3DS is saved as Unwelded. Is there a cheap fix?

3DS models are often saved as unwelded meshes, with pointed edges, and not smoothed.

Max has plugins to fix this problem, but I don't have Max.

Isn't there a converter that will import 3DS, and then Export welded 3DS? It should be free. Any cheap program will do. Does Milkshape export welded 3DS meshes?

well basically it looks like you need a program with a weld tool with a threshold, so you can just select all the verts and hit it.


however... i have no idea whether milkshape can do this.


what about using .obj and then convert that to 3ds from milkshape instead? There's not much to go on here, what program often saves a 3ds file as a broken mesh?

are you sure you're exporting normals properly, or is the object really made out of unconnected triangles?

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Anim8or, Lithunwrap, both save unwelded 3DS even after I weld the model in them. I read on the net that 3DS was made for the ST, and was never meant to be used for todays computers. Therefore it is limited to what it can do. However there are programs that save welded 3DS. I can't find a cheap one. I thought I found the solution with Google Sketchup, but the free version doesn't export 3DS. The other version is over £300. This link explains that it can export 3DS welded meshes.

Try Blender. It imports/exports 3ds files.

I found something. It's called Accutrans 3D, and it's a model converter. It exports 3DS welded smooth models. It has taken me a long time to find this, so I hope others will try it out. It's shareware, but not limited in any way, they just trust you to pay up at the end of 30 days.
