Sorry guys, i posted this exact topic in the 3d pro section under support thinking it was the general 3d chatroom If a mod sees it could you please delete that one?

Hey, i took a 1 week animation course at the Illinois Institute of Art and we had 1 4 hour class to teach us 3d studio max and how to make basic shapes and use splines and stuff.

Now our teacher taught us VERY basic things, not really how to make a character, just a simple sword. I am dying to make characters so i stayed after for like 5 minutes and he explained you can make a model by making a box then using the Cut, extrude, and inset tools and cut away at the box until it is a basic outline of your character. He told me to convert it to Edit Poly. Modify>polygon then use extrude and inset and the cut tool. He did not teach me how to use them soooo now i am home and i am messing around with them and i am STUCK. I do not know where to even start (im trying to make a simple torso)

The course ended today so its not like i can ask him for help.

Can somebody PLEASSSE help me with this? If not can somebody offer another way to make a character? If you do can you help me with that?

Please respond back and if you have enough time message me on AIM - standardrummer14.

thanks in advanced... and here is a penguin to show my graditude

PS. i want to make things like this... http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/744/744397/img_3565672.html

I'd reccomend going to Help > Tutorials in 3ds max and then going to the "character modeling" tutorial. All built into 3ds max. That should probably help you out.

Sureal Chris if your going to post, learn how to spell.
It looks to me that those models there have normal maps, but you shouldnt worry about those till later.

I did a quick good search and got these websites for tutorials
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/
http://www.3dnuts.com/tutorials.shtml
http://www.duber.cz/index.php?section=training&subsection=all&filter=free
There are some good tutorials if you look around in there:
http://www.the3dstudio.com/product_search.aspx?id_category_0=11&id_category_1=15
http://www.3dluvr.com/content/maxedout.php

By the way, how much does 3ds max cost? It looks like its an extremly powerful program.

Thanks(!) I get one word wrong and miss piece of punctuation, the kinda of mistakes anyone doing several things at once can make, and people start having a go at me. As for the price it's $3495 or just under 2 grand.

Thats this forum for ya, some people just say things that are pointless and p**s people off.

Here is one very useful tutorial, I've followed it in other 3D applications, but it is built for 3D Studio Max, I learnt a lot from it, hopefully it will pay you the same favour.

Joan of Arc tutorial

Good luck with that mate, unless you expect to have an extremely good portfolio done soon then there's no chance, it seems everyone is looking for people with qualifications, it's mainly because there are so many wannabe artists who pop up and seemed to have "acquired" 3dsmax and they all put moon textures onto spheres and apply for jobs.
(If that sounded patronising sorry, i don't mean it, i do wish you the best of luck in your search, just a heads up from me who has been trying for over a year to get into the industry with no luck, purely because i have no degrees)

Z-Brush is an amazing bit of kit, i recommend it to anyone who has the money for it, its not expensive either (by professional 3d standards)

Hey guys, I ran into a quick problem.

I am making a sword with SPLINES and i made the blade and i am crafting the part above the handle grip but below the blade. Like where the blade goes into. Now what i did was make half of that design, i duped it and flipped it around so it can make one big piece.
NOW.. I highlighted one of the designed handle peices and ATTATCHED taht to the blade. then i carried on to ATTATCH the 2 identicle pieces of the hande but it will not let me. I have tried several of times but it wont give me those little circles that the ATTATCH tools gives you to attach pieces.

Anybody know what is wrong? Has this ever happened to somebody?

Thanks again, and here is your penguin.

Yeah, thanks for the advice there

Im just playing with a trial of C4D and I think I may purchase it soon, at £500 it's not to bad

Also, Im not thinking of now, Im thinking of 2-3 years time, so thats 2-3 years or practice.

Well then, I shan't point you in the direction of a 'Radical' games developer here in the mids who look for people with a distinct style being generally awesome at what they do.

Ditto to Oolite, the 'art'(if you like) industry is a difficult industry to be successful in, as so many people are trying for jobs, and its qualifications that impress the employers unless your work stands out as something a whole lot more and completely original, even those with degrees still do have trouble.

Here is one thing I don't get, so many people think '3DS Max is the best because its 2 grand and its very professional', well I would only go near Max if it could do what I want to do with it at the ease and comfortability I currently have, who cares if I can use mental ray for awesome looking renders with good speed and the same if I bought renderman for it. However I can get the same looking features I need and same level of impression with Blender or Cinema 4D or any of less proffesionally priced apps, some of the tools may not equal out, but there are easy ways of getting certian effects and third party apps like Zbrush can be used. 3DS Max doesn't mean best, its just what the industry use as well as Maya.

Don't forget the ease of Cinema 4D, I myself use an older version (R6) but it is really easy to get started and your head around, I have always recommended it for those who can afford it, but always remember that there are 3 types you can buy, the demo is of the most expensive types, the cheapest will have none of the additional modules, the next one up has half and the last has them all, these modules include advanced animation(MOCCA), advanced render, physics(dynamics), Hair etc.

When I first started looking at 3D Modeling applications I really liked Cinema 4D. I liked it's look, and it's layout; the price was great as well. I was turned off, however, at what appeared to be a lack of attention to game development. Musashi, is however pursuing that right now using C4D; I've just never come back for another look.

I'm currently moving away from Caligari's TrueSpace/GameSpace, and into Lightwave now. In another couple of months I'll be weening myself off of Paint Shop Pro, and into PhotoShop (when I can scrounge up the $600).

3DS Max may have my name on it someday (Character Studio looks good), but if I can do in Lightwave (as an Indy Game Developer) what I need to get done for our game development, then I don't see the point in spending more money just because that's what the industry uses. I mean, come on...the Serious Sam Series is great; and they used Lightwave to create their media. Its all about the pipeline for me.

I own 3D World Studio as well; but when Torque's Constructor comes out, I'll be buying that too. It doesn't hurt to have multiple applications, if you can afford it. Whatever makes your job quicker/easier without sacrificing quality (or 'the vision') is worth it in the long run, IMO.

Character Studio is pretty good, glad they included it with max, it has its own way of working though, that can be quite awkward to get used too.

CAT has to be the best Animation Toolkit for max i have seen though, i do recommend it for anyone who is animating a lot, Won't work with DBPro though.

EDIT: C4d never appealed to me, it seemed to get the features it has way after everyone else, by then they had moved onto something else. Also, NURBS in anything are a pain in the arse.

Cinema 4D does have its issues with game media, but it hasn't been hard getting around things, if your exporters don't work probaly, using something like Milkshape to animate and export isn't much trouble
