They are useful because they can create life like textures. Another plus for using them is that textures are easy to create! So far I have found only two programs that do this.

Well, especially in the first example, that's really geared more towards creating render-time textures as opposed to in game textures. As for the second one, it seems nice, but I'll stick to Photoshop myself.

I think that Dark Tree is much more powerful.

It can easily make animated textures and normal maps

the big modellers have this sort of thing built in, but its not so user friendly and requires a lot of patience and understanding

I don't have a sig, live with it.

I tried the demo for Genetica, its quite easy to use once you get the hang of it. Its very impressive.
As for the price, I think im going to sell some textures and then hope that I make some money....
