I'm hoping to get a demo release of my game done in the next week or so. What are the guidelines for this ? I always get nervous before pressing `compile` as i@m sure to miss something stoopid. Something not implemented/not checked.
I'm thinking of....commands to check the host machine/gfx card etc. Is it best to check for GFX card options (texture&lighting, transparency) ? If they're not there, will the game fall over and die, or just not look as good ?
Any other tips/advice on compiling the final FINAL file is much appreciated.

Distribute a beta version - that might be a good idea

No, my point is...what problems can I avoid ? Bugs are bugs, and a beta will show them. But how about compatibility with gfx cards ? Can I check the host card will use my transparent objects etc. As a 3D animator I have a checklist for `final` to-do items before I commit to the final time-consuming render. I'm sort of trying to do that.

Yes, you can get what features a card has - might be worth implementing that.

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

One more thing....last time I compiled I needed all the required files in the same dir as the DB.exe or it could'nt find them. Is this right ? Seeing as the user is encouraged to put objects into OBJ, sounds into WAV etc....they then need moving back to the .EXE's root dir. Or am I missing something again ?

That would be more or less correct, because where the executable is, determines the current selected directory (and hence from where all file searches are performed)

I think its best to put media etc into relevent directories from the executable directory, and thus its all grouped together :

MEDIA\...
WAV\...
etc

and access them like that (without drive letter reference).

If you want to put things all over the place you can always modify PATH (not recommended, especially for 2000 & XP), add lines in the Registry (not recommended because its the registry).

It depends how you load your media in the game.

If you use 'Load Object "player.x",1 then the game will try to load it from the same directory as the .exe

If you use 'Load Object "objects/player.x",1 then the game will try to load the file from the objects directory, which should be in the directory of your .exe

If you use 'Load Object "C:\Windows\Desktop\Mygame\Projects\DB-FINALFANTASY-MMORG\l337game\objects' then I personally will hunt you down.

And on other thing, dont assume that the Windows system is on C: - it gets very annoying when programs assume that during installation...
