Hey guys, I have been fooling around with the 3DS Max 7 trial, and wanted to know what you guys think of what I have made. Since I am new to it, I am probably wasting polys somewhere, but oh well, I am just tryin' it out.

Here is a G36C render I did, just playing around with clay rendering, I think I got it right. More to come.

looks nice

i remember first discovering the clay rendering, so easy, and great results, unfortunately its not best for every scene (mettallics and such)

how comes your using the 7 trial and not 8?

the model looks a tad blocky on the sides, go into 'edge' mode and select the blocky edges, and use the chamfer tool play around with it, makes corners much cleaner

Thanks for the tip, Jon, I will post my P90 which I am very satisfied with in a few, just rendering now. I am using 7 because it was a smaller file size, and my pc is cluttered with crap, didnt want to clutter it to much more

Alright, here is the P90, tell me what you think. I have a question about booleans. How come when I use booleans, I can only subtract cylinders, or is there something I am missing?

subtract cylinders, you should be able subtract any geometry

looks nice, once again pretty blocky though, have you tried chamfering the edges?

yes but you can do it for curved edges, instead of the small details

Let me guess.

You used the splines and added the extrude modifier. Then made it into an editable poly.

I just think they look too boxy. I wouldnt worry about how many polys you use, just make them more life life.

doesnt look like splines to me, there are some obvious bevels and curved shapes, just looks like the early stages of box modelling

Actually, no. I haven't used splines at all, I made boxes starting at the stocks, made them editable poly, extruded them in the shape of the weapons, used booleans for the holes like the top of the G36c and the P90 grips, and added the barrels and clips as different geometry. I haven't used splines since I first got GMAX which was last year.

I have another question, is there a way to fill in empty triangles? Because I have a hole in the top of my M16 I will post if a bit and I dont know how to fix it. Thanx in advance.

go into polygon mode, and select create, providing there are no faces attached to the vertices, you can draw a polygon by joining up vertices

I dont like triangle talk, I only work with polygons. I also wouldnt use boolean, it distorts the mesh some times.

If he's using the Trial Version of Max, then he can't release them.

The weapons are coming along though, Havok.

Thanks, and Keith is right about releasing them, so I am sorry about that. I am thinking about making a purchase in the future when I get enough paper. That will not be for a while, though.

Here is a handgun (one of my first models in max), I dont like it that much, though. Tomorrow I will post my wip of the M249. Mike go sleepy now

Well, by the time you get the money for it, you'll have learned enough to start producing right away.

I'm not sure why you have the butt of the weapon angled down like that. The rest looks pretty good though.

It was because the reference I used had a different styled stock, so I took a guess, I will fix it now.

Generally the buffer spring in the stock of a weapon (if it has one) will line up with the barrel, to absorb the impact properly. I had a standard M249 for years, it's butt stock was only "slightly" (very slightly) angled down.

@KeithC
I fixed it now. I will post a new render later.

@Zaibatsu
It is not really textured, just yellow. I did this to define it and to make you can see it.

@KIWIDOGGIE
No, they aren't. I have enough skills to do my own models. So why would I waste my time importing everything into Max and rendering? I used to use models from turbosquid, and other things like that, but when I did, I had no pride in what I used them for. So I took a couple of months and learned to do my own stuff. Now, I never download/buy model packs, and rarely download free models. If we all get the model packs, all games here would look like the same old boring games we usually see. Thats why I am proud of people who make custom media, even if it is something simple like a traffic cone or a tv. So no, I did not steal/rip anything.

@Higgins
Thanks, man!

@All
This sucks, I only have 6 days left of my trial, and I havent gotten my 3DS Max Character Modeling book yet! Would I be able to download the trial again after it expires?
