@Rob K: Yeah, I know what Terrains are for.

However, I don't deem them so far as "Advance" matrices given the limited possibilities we do have to modify its structure once crated.

Pls don't misunderstand me, perhaps there are some other features about terrains that should be considered here like performance (which I honestly don't know). And maybe that's why Terrain's commands exists as a different set from matrices' one.

So, in my opinion, matrices are so far much more powerful and flexible because they let you go for more advance goals, and consequently, that drove me to think a native command like "MAKE MATRIX FROM HEIGHTMAP" could help to increase that power and flexibility, and in turn, the goals you could achieve.

Well Rob, I agree on that.

But, even if the Terrains' functionality eventually matches Matrices', I still want "MAKE MATRIX FROM HEIGHTMAP" as a native command so you can then choose whether to use a Terrain or a Matrix based on, say, performance issues and so on.

And Please, oh Please could you get the find command working in the help file.

I can't count the number of times i've had to go through each of the sections and subsections to find the info on ONE command.

Other than that, not much else. You guys have done a great job with DBPro and i would like to thank you for it.

I get better performance with terrains than matrixes by 30%. Terrains ARE matrixes, they just use LOD to improve rendering performance.

That is an IDE issue, which is unrelated to Patch 5. If you want to search the help file properly, download the editor PowerTools, written by Hubdule. I think that there is a link at the top of this forum.

To add to that, I think that the idea is to get rid of matrixes, as they duplicate functionality. In which case terrains need ALL the matrix commands plus:

SET TERRAIN LOD ON
SET TERRAIN LOD OFF

SET TERRAIN DETAIL LEVEL

etc.

One of these days it'd be nice to have a DBP-native file requester and a simple Windows message box with an OK button, similar to ShowMessage in Delphi.

ShowMessage is actually a Windows API command if I remember correctly, or certainly some of the MessageBox ones are, you could use them via CALL DLL.

@Rob K: if terrains have a better performace and they will have all of the commands'n'functionality of matrices (which means that for instance you can then make with Terrains the effect of moving ground, water, etc.), then I agree on totally migrating to terrains and adding the commands you suggest.

MrTAToad and Rob K -- File requesters and message boxes can definitely done now via Call DLL. I was just trying to say I think they're so useful that they deserve to have their own native DB commands.

There's a nice file requester approach described here: http://www.darkbasicpro.com/apollo/view.php?t=4727&b=6 But people shouldn't have to track that down just to use a file requester! If there were a native DBP command, its use would be described in the docs under 'File Commands.'
