I am making an asteroid model in Cinema4d. Pretty easy. Sphere, or platonic solid. Randomly nudge the vertices (a tool in C4D.) And you have a nice irregular sherical low poly asteroid shape. (about 3 steps.)

The problem is with texture mapping in DBC. Made a 128x128 image in an old version of Painter with wrapping turn on so the texture is seamless, in theory.

In DBC I load the image and apply it to me asteroid. Either I get a solid gray result (if I 'port usind Direct-x format, or the texture map repeats on every face (weird kolidoscope effect) if I port with 3DS format. I saw something in another post where the answer is that some modelers might not export UV mapping information correctly, if at all. Like I said, I am using C4D (older version but I do have it andknow it.) Its great for making the geometry of the models (space ships, etc.) Its problem seems to be with shader/texture mapping exporting. (and animation, btw, at least for DBC, havent tried DBP) I have spent hows trying more things than I can keep track of. Again, I get either a solid color, or an unnatural looking pattern where each face seems to be getting its own copy of the texture.

Is there a free program where I can load .X or .3DS models, paint the faces or otherwise apply UV or other texture information, and re-export again?

BTW, the asteroid tumbles (having a little problem with the sequence of object rotations with that too. The two rotations that I apply dont look completely natural.)

Sorry for all the questions.

Errr. Once I post there seems to be no way to go back and turn on the "MailBack" checkbox. Even if I ask to edit my post, that option is not available. Maybe the forum designer should consider fixing that.

Blender is free and has UV mapping built in. You can export a static model as a .x from it and it will import fine into dbpro.

MMN, I do appreciate the suggestion, but I had downloaded and tried Blender 3D last year and found it not to my liking. Please dont get me wrong. I am not saying that it is a bad program for everyone, but it is for me as I did not care for its interface. If I can find no other solution, then I will give Blender another try.

BTW, Im using the Classic version of DB, not the Pro version. The version is not a choice at this time as I am developing course material for a class.

Lithunwrap is good and has a free version, check the 3D modelling tools post.
