anybody know a decent html editor? I don't want one that supports 30 differant types of internet languages.. I want an editor that can syntax highlight just html and maybe javascript... thats it.. and preferably a preview tab so i dont have to keep internet explorer open... personally i would keep notepad if it syntax highlighted^_^ thanx

HomeSite is good, but costs money. The best free one I've ever seen is Araneae but you could do a lot worse than check out this list of them: http://www.tucows.com/htmltext95.html

why not edit a keyword.ini for darkedit, and copy it to a new directory - setup IE as the compiler with no options

should do the job just as well no?

[edit-]

thats a good selection of them there... there used to be once called VRMLpad i used to use they also did a HTML - was pretty good. was free as long as you could put up with the adverts too
i'll have to ask my sis later when she gets on

thats weird... cause it reads all the characters i setup for it, i edited it a year or so ago for use with BorlandC (seemed easiest way at the time)
never had any problems, but maybe you mean in the keywords.ini - in which case i think it only reads letters.

but exports all ANSI symbols fine - infact uses UTF so if you wanted to you can code in like Chinese or soemthing. Ofcourse you do that won't compile in DB, but for other languages that actually support it it will

FrontPage is bloody annoying, you try to add something in that it doesn't have into the HTML code, then you test it and if it didn't work then it deletes the whole chunk of code that only has 1 mistake in it.

Install Netscape
it will coexist with Explorer,
just don't make it your default browser.
Use the Composer to quickly and easily make pages.

Like Raven, I use Dreamweaver (I use it everyday for my job, being a web designer). It is VERY powerful but has a few annoyances. It is also not cheap enough for any old Tom, Dick or Harry to buy just to do a personal website.

Used Frontpage for a couple of years but went off it after a while.

Can't see how anyone could do a biggish website just with notepad because once you start embedding tables within tables, you soon get confused! I do know people that do use notepad becuase they can't stand the way some HTML programs rewrite code for you because it thinks it's trying to be helpful.

Yes I hate that! Plus some really pad out your codde too (frontpage, stop hiding there at the back...)

tables within tables which then include iframes with more tables

Its easy not to get confused in Notepad, so long as you set out your code right and remember to close all tages, it flows sensibly. I love the simplicity of html

my new favorite aranae, been using it now a couple days and i got the hang of it...works like notepad plus gives u the regular features like multiple documents open at the same time, and more importantly syntax highlighting!

the problem with most editors is they cause massive bloating and excess code, and if you don't know html you're left with an awkwardly made site.

before Dreamweaver i used Flash... and before that i used frontpage express
i can't stand Frontpage standard/pro - but express was bloody marvelous
you edited like word and code was in highlighted notepad form.

pitty that only came with IE 4.x Extra which is no longer available (or even installable) on most systems now.

I'm using Crimson Editor for my webpages.Used to use SynEdit which has a handy hex editor as well.

They're both free and simple to use.

Look at download.com for them

well perhaps someone like myself who doesn't know the html code for almost anything
how longs the net been around? like what 14years and i can just about change fonts styles and colours, setup hyperlinks, image links and background sounds.

everything else i just can't get my head around, don't ask me why but HTML is just a language and code set i could never get the hang of
