OK, if you open the fpsc skeleton for milkshape there's something like 2000 + frames! and it may not fit your body shape (such as my chubby clown with the hammer), so I figure there's GOT to be a workaround or a method to get my custom skeleton and animations into fpsc and use THEIR ai... here's what I found out (if you already know this stuff or have MAX just humour me...):

I have a clown with 61 frames of animation. NONE of them match the animations in the fpsc skeleton. So I have to do some editing.

1. I opened the fpi I wanted to use and found anywhere there was the word "animate"; in my case I am only using the "coward.fpi" for the clown. I needed the following animations, 1, 2, 5, and 31.
2. I replaced the animation frames in my fpe file with the frame numbers from MY model. I just kept all the animation calls and replaced the numbers as needed.

This is only a START but its a START! You don't need Max but can go cheaper if you need to with this method. You can drop my clown into your user entity file folder and check things out for yourself.

You're totally right marty.

Of course you could just use the manual to find out what animations 1,2,5 and 31 do...

Then in the characters FPE you make sure that your keyframe references are labeled 1,2,5 and 31

and the character should animate fine.

There are problems with not using the correct animation references, perhaps you'll be ok with a character that just runs away, but once you start getting to characters that fight back, things can get really 5crewed up!

Anyway, good of you to post. Its this kind of thing that forwards the knowledge base of the general community.

Peace

getting one that fights back correctly IS the challenge! my only problem with the manual was just figuring out what each animation actually meant, so having that useful milkshape fpsc file to examine helped a bunch...
