2D All the way! / 2d side scroller starter?

hello all,

where shall i begin if want to make a 2d side scroller (e.g Mario) how do i do colision, gravity and walking jumping standing still stances. i am using DB(enhanced)

i thought i might start off using some really poor sprites, one colour for the floor and one for the back drop, and a 16-bit sprite for the main character.

but i was just wondering, where ow where do i start ? If any of you have any source code i could look at, advice i could learn from or tutorial i could review, or some over forum that you think might benifit me, please post straight away.

I desgined a Quick Sprite that i could use

Ah, Photo bucket always shrinks it...

I've decided even before I know how to create a game idea, its ganna be called Agent Crow (cause crows are awsome) and its ganna be a side on shooter/action game in which you take on the role of this mystirous assisan. taking out future terriosts as they use technology to take over/destroy/disable/DEMOLISH the world. what goverment do you work for? who is under that helmet ? all shall be revield as you use your skills to work your way through urban/jungle/space/desert/etc war zones.

its kinda ganna be one of those, metal slug, Crazy Hard games?

How about it ? not a team Request! not a cry for help...more of a teach me shout!

Well, theres lots to do. Start from wherever you'd like, i'd say. I started loading the images and setting up the animation for a iddle, breathing, running and jumping action in my game. After that i worked out how to construct scenario, but with no scrolling yet done.
Added a really simple height collision, so to show it to some friends, and left it there, as i started with a rather more priority project.

Of course, for each step i took, i made a separate program to back me up in case i needed to, or simply to ease the work in such phases, say for example, a little program that helped me grab and offset the images used in the sprite so they were properly alligned, also used for the map itself, and another one used as a scenario builder, but... no big deal.

'bout that sprite of yours, looks nice, megaman type if im correct, with a samus feel to it .

well thanks for the advise Zergei, do you think i should do all the sprites indivdualy or leave them in one picture and clip them out? if clipping how will i do such a thing? i think i'll make the idle and all those frames as .gif secunces so i can just add them in, like so ?



dam that looks so dam crappy ...shesh, any one out there that could gimmi a few tips or even draw me up a quick sprite sheet?

That sprite has MegaMan written all over it

Bearing in mind im in the same boat as you, i found 3d much more easier than 2d lol.

I'm currently working on 2d colision / animation , still you scan all the frames of a move , then alter the load-use code ,to swap b2in collision frames.(ex:1-20 is idle / 21-42 is walk)
