Lets say that i have a character that we want to texture it
using the "Unwarp UVW map".
And i dont have textures for it so i'll create them in photoshop
someone told me that i can make 3ds automaticly make an image
and it will map it on the object or the character.
and then i can edit the image from photoshop easily.

how can this be done?
thanx in advance
unwarp uvw texturing is my worst nightmare

If you want a decent UV map that you can make sense of, you'll need to manually map sections of faces yourself by adding the Unwrap UVW modifier to the object, then selecting faces and choosing the preferred map-type for those faces from the list of buttons (Planar, Pelt, Box, etc).

However if you're in a rush, select all of the faces of the object and choose either Pelt, Box, or Planar on the appropriate axis and you'll have an "ok" UV Map (however if the object is something like a character, like you said, you'll probably miss details on the object this way).

render to texture is more for baking in lighting onto textures in Max...

your gonna have to learn how to unwrap the model and you should learn proper techniques, visit psonics website for some begging tuts on the subject....

attached is my start at mapping a character built in Max, it uses mainly plain mapping for basic stuff and pelt mapping for objects like the arms legs head etc...

edit: if i could get fraps to work with max i could put a video tut together on uvmapping ...

Have a look at the following tutorial : http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/bases1.asp

It teachs you how to uvwmap but also at the end of page 6 it tells you about exporting the uvwmap as a image to work on.

What version of Max do you have? If you have 8 then there are some great new UV Unwrap features such as "pelting." It lets you split the model into parts by selecting seams. You can then select this "pelt" and Unwrap the UVs. It then tries to project the pelt with the angles of the faces in mind. You can relax the uvs which is a great feature that really lays out the faces properly.

The whole process makes texturing a million times easier. There's a tutorial video for this pelting process on discreets website.

Neeeeeeeewom!

When UV mapping for detail and seamlessness sake it ebst to try and link all the parts together if possible.

the pants should be all one unfolded mass so that there is the least amount of seams you have to deal with.
