My retro comp game didn't quite make it. I was up till 2am last night trying to finish it but it just wasn't perfect yet to I'll let it go and release it later when its good and ready. (Only probably needed a few more house too )
I didn't get DarkBasic till the beginning of march, so I really didn't have as much time as I would have wanted.

Its too bad cause it's a very sharp looking 3D remake of Centipede. I think it could have at least been in the top 3. Anyways...

When do you think we'll see the next Competition. Do these things happen quite often, or was it the first of its kind?

Me neither... no retro entry from me this time.

I wonder if next time we can get an ATI sponsored event so that the next patches will work great on ATI and suck for nVidia users...

Actually, there's been a 20 line challenge comp every month since January. I didn't even know this until I started looking into the other forums. I entered the 20 line challenge a while ago - but now I'm inspired to do some more little programs.

I missed it too. Too busy working on 3D engines. Hopefully I'll be able to integrate them all and make a kick @$$ game for next competition!

raps - "not nearly enough IMHO..."

Did you enter? If not, what difference does it make if its not enough? Infact did anyone in this thread enter?! I'm not saying your opinion doesn't count if you didn't, I'm just saying it doesn't hold much weight with me. If everyone who coded something and actually entered said "more more!" then we'll up the ante and regularity, otherwise we'll be looking at around another 3 months before the next one. Early summer time most likely.

Cheers,

Rich

I've made two games and I like competitions. But already now, no... But I love to see one when it's early summer. I like competitions, but some time between them is better x-d

Major compos like the last one cannot happen more than 3 times a year I would suspect, it's just too much work! One in spring, one summer and one winter. However we're thinking of having a 48-hour challenge - i.e. we announce a weekend well in advance, post up what the game must include on say friday evening and then everyone gets 48 hours to code their butts off and enter the game.

Cheers,

Rich

Of course - what's to stop some one from just taking some killer pre-made code they've been working on for months and apply it to the particulars of the competition? The guidelines would have to be pretty specific - but you've probably already thought of that.

You can't stop that - but then again it depends how specific the game criteria is. It won't be "open ended" for sure, there would be specific things you have to include.

Rich

Sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, since my second retro compo entry Sphong! was made yesterday in under 4 hours . It was written because of the appeal for a 90th game. All the code was written from scratch, except for a bit to create a starry skysphere texture which was copied from Ripples 'n' Lights 3. The hardest bit was working out the angles for the ball to bounce at, but now I have it sussed, I should be able to bounce a ball off any surface at any angle! Yes!

I'd like to see a 48hr challenge. As most people know I've been entering the 20 line challenge as well, so my opinion might actually count lol .

It would be great if the 48 hour challenge included all the media...

There are 92 entries.

A challenge based around media would be good, 'All these completely random 3d models and images must feature prominently in your game! No other media allowed! Go!'

Yeah, you could see many different games with different play stiles with the same media. That would be great fun to see!

more competitions, more!! see, some people have little or no drive in making games, but hosting these competitions give people a very good reason to make games, it does for me!

I don't really support the 48hr competition! firstly the cheating, then theres not enough time (i know that's the point) to make something worth while, and i'm not really sure that many people would enter!

everyday of life is a new chapter that has already been fortold but is up to the soul to capture.

Though a 48 hour competition wouldn't get in the way of any other projects. I for one completely lost track of everything else while making my entry... [b])

He he he he, 48 hours thing sounds good. If the comp had been 3 weeks later I would have entered (School hols). But apart from hols I have very little time .
Hmm, that 48 hour thing sounds like mighty fun though. You give out a list of things to include. Like images, words, sounds, controls, effects, premises. *sigh*

Yes the comp gave me enough inspiration to get a game in progress and head for success... Even if I did fall before the line I put in over 100 man hours getting it together and I have to say the comments on entrants gaining an upper hand and carrying more weight on a decision for more comps felt like a slap in the face, when I was of the peeps that tried and out of sheer misfortune couldn't quite finish up a good enough title to enter...

With this small point aside and hoping I may have earned a tiny bit of weight to throw at the more competitions request mentioned above, I will say the community seems more productive with the competitions in full swing and encourage more of them.

For those who think that 48h isn't enough time to make a game. Have a look at http://www.ludumdare.com/. There was a 48h competition last week-end, (and there has been others before). Some people make really great games in that time.
