I have no idea how many of you out there may actually use this, but it's everyones favorite software...FREE!

http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I was looking around for something today for an easier way to story board things. Yeah I was doing the traditional deal with a sketch pad and frame after frame of things to keep strait with how I wanted my cinematic to go. Beyond even the cinematic you could kind of keep a running tally on how you wanted to set up levels and such.

Up above you can see how things can all tree off of say your "Player". You can put symbols like for order of completion...little icons to remember whats going on when you come back to a board after 4 weeks...whatever.

Above you can see for my little story board the player is awakened by a call from his boss. I used little icons of a phone and linux to represent the computer call.

After that theres two children represented in a green which could be a similar timeline like: as hes getting the call he swings his feet off the bed ect.

Though I was looking for something more for cinematic I can see where laying out a whole game would work on this and faster and more organized then drawing everything out or keeping track of children plot lines in notepad. Never seen any program like this listed......may be of some use.

This is storyboarding, this is mind mapping.

If you have no life then perhaps this would be OK, but i'd much rather do this on paper just to get a few a hours off the computer and be traditional.

@Liz
Go read that site Liz. It's exactly what you see with far more options then my 5 minute mock up explained. Just a way to keep things organized.

@Avenging Eagle
Yeah that makes sense. I'd rather spend a few hours and do things manually then take a few minutes and do something that won't be lost, won't have anything spilled on it, won't be forgotten in what pad it was drawn in(since you can use images as well as text). This is far to organized for my taste as well. What a dumb post. Commenting on peoples lives like you've got a clue...pfft.

Locrain, I think it's a good thing to share, especially when trying to make a game. At least this way, you dont have to erase something and place it someplace else and make a mess of your ideas. It's simple, it's a good way to organize and helps plan out a better gaming map and story line.

Kudos to you.

@Avenging -
Any tool that helps a user get his thoughts straight is a good tool. Granted, if your actually sketching out drawings and such for not only storyline ideas, but graphics ideas as well, then pad and pencil is a good tool, but for laying out details on gameplay and storyline, this tool is useful as well.

Different strokes for different folks. I say use whatever suites your needs. Sharing tools is always good.

@stamina:

I wasn't saying don't use this program, i was just saying i prefer to map out and storyboard manually (coz i'm old fashioned and British).
