Whenever I try to place a ceiling on a building, it just erases the building.. Am I doing something wrong? Please help (I'm new to this)

you could actually be editing the floor where the walls are built, press + to go the upper level

if you really are editing the level you're supposed to, select the tile and choose 'paint floor only', it's in the toolbar at the top somewhere

You can also press "F" while in segment editing mode to paint the floor only.
