if you dont know what a cornet is then you should listen to some more classical music! its alot like a trumpet but with lower tones.

heres my progress so far.

my idea is to make a cornet with a set of ghost hands. both as an exercise in hand modelling and in lofts.(which what the cornet is mostly made of as of now.). the hands and cornet will be set in a scary enviroment. and possibly an animation but the animation isnt to likely ill just stick with the still image for now.

c and c is always welcome.

ah yes. wip being a key word. this is simply a test material a placeholder. materials in my workflow are next to last.

Higher tones actually ,

looks pretty cool, need to work on the bends on the pipes though, yours look like someone just bent the piped by hand, they should be alot more gradual turns and look smoother.

your both wrong and right. cornet has higher tones, but his model looks like the lower version, the marching version of the french horn I'm not sure what its called.

Then again there is nothing next to it for reference, but the way that the things are spaced tells me its the lower one.

EDIT: also you dont have the tuning slide or the spit valve there either.

im modelling the b flat version of the cornet. the higher pitch version would actually be the e flat soprano. atleast thats my understanding.

o and thanks i see the problem areas in the bends ill fix those quickly.

ya those are the extra details i said i would add. which im working on right now. its actually quite hard to find a good reference of these instruments.

Its looking great dude, the hand looks like it has a bit of untidy geometry, but as long as you hide it, who's gonna notice

the hand is a bit flat so it seems. theres dips and curves and valleys and mountains in the palm, and since it looks like you've got a good amount of polys to work with I think you should study the palm a bit.

Other than that the only other thing is that the hand looks a bit small, looks like a kids hand compared to the instrument, which I'm guessing is only a bit bigger than a regular C natural trumpet. a step and a half wouldnt do but a few more inches of pipe.

im no expert in organic modelling. the fact i even got anything remotely close to a hand pleases me. i already started a render before i saw your post. we'll see how it looks materials and all. then ill make changes when i think i need to.

Fair enough, I know the feeling A slight dip in the bottom side of the hand should do it and rely on the texturing and rendering.

Good work.

Just for reference, when playing the cornet the thumb of the right hand should go in between the first and second valves, under the lead pipe, so as to help support the instrument while playing

He might left handed, I am, but I prefer playing intrustments right handed, but not everyone does, I think Jimi Hendrix played the guitar left handed although there were no left handed ones then

the front curve of the cornets tubing (sat just under the horn) looks too pinched to me.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

hendrix reverse stringed his fender so the tabs would be easier to read.

I wouldnt know the first thing about playing the trumpet, I played Oboe in our school band years back. The trumpets sat behind me and to the right.

i thought we were talking about cornets.

@Manic: i know. damn lofts the turn is either to sharp or to wide. then making the radius smaller didnt work either.

Okay, not the full support, but without having your thumb there, pressing down the valve keys would make the cornet wiggle unless you have an incredibly firm grip with your left hand. I should know, I play trumpet
