Hello all - I'm dead new to this, so excuse any incorrectly placed posts, repeat questions.. (yes I did do a search beforehand)

I am trying to find some sites on the net that have good free .wav samples I can incorporate into my levels - does anyone know of any good ones please...

....there is only so much time a Human being can spend trawling through google before the brain gets up and goes on holiday...

Thx in advance,

LW

Yep. Got all them, thanks.

Spotted them, as you say, 1 min in.

I was looking for GOOD sound effects tho...most of those are a bit ... well... they belong on a ZXSpectrum.

All I was looking for was a computerised voice saying something about a computer malfunction, but the best I can get is cheezy Star Trek stuff which would be recognisable a mile off.

Thanks anyway tho Raptor222

If you want something original, you will have to make it yourself. About all you will find at these sites is well recognized voices from movies and TV shows like, what you said, Star Trek, Lost in Space, Futurama, etc....

I agree 100% with that - and that's what I did...kinda.

Anyone seen the advert for the "talking avatar" on websites? there's a box you can type stuff in to try it, and thats what I did - then used an audio-sampling program to get a sound-byte.

Added a bit of reverb on it, and it works a treat.
I'll post it here when I get a chance.

Again, thnx for the help.

@Lunarwolf

That's an excellent idea and a great resource for the community.

Perhaps you could give a little more detail on this.

Sure - though you'll all probably giggle at how I did it with my limited resources...

Here's how I did it, though I am sure someone else can find a better / more efficient way of doing it.

You'll need "Audacity" - free sound manipulation program. Find it at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

You'll also need something to record with (I used a simple Headset-with-mic)

1. Go to http://www.oddcast.com/sitepal/ (a site called "Sitepal"
2. Click on "Try Demo"
3. Click on "Record" and choose "Text to Type"
4. (this is the naff bit) flick the mic round to the left ear-piece.
5. Fiddle about on the voice-box of Sitepal's "Demo" and get a voice you like (I tend to stick with "Kate(US)")
6. Type in what you want, then have Audacity handy, click "record" on Audacity, then click "Preview" on the Sitepal site and it will record the voice.
7. After it's done, listen to it through Audacity, check it is ok.
8. Use the "Export to Wav" option in Audacity then you can import it straight into the game.

Its as easy (and improvised) as that!

TIP 1: Chances are the will be a silent gap at the front of your recording. If you want to, select the "blank" area in Audacity and click the "scissors" icon (far left) to cut out the dead sound.
TIP 2: It is going to record pretty quietly. I'd suggest using the "Effect / Amplify" option in Audacity to spice it up a little.

Hope this helps!

That's great Lunarwolf,

I have Audacity and did a little experiment. You don't need the microphone. Select "text to speech" instead or record. Then in Audacity, select "Stereo Mix" from the recording device dropdown box and it will record directly from the system. Record, then cut your track and export it directly as an .ogg

Nice.

if you want it really oldschool (S.A.M. the speech-synthesizer-style) try www.analogx.com ... you can't get more synthetic and artifical / robotic then that.

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/sayit.htm

the other plug-ins of this hero of programming history are equally cool..
