Ooohh....I like the new reply window.

Well, I finally found out what was wrong with my computer. You guessed it, a virus. (Joy) Something called Win32.Pinfi that infected over 300 files. 300!!!! And it only attacks .exe's and .scr's. I didn't think I had that many programs.

Not surprisingly the virus attacked programs after they closed. That must be why the time delay, restarting the computer, and using other programs shut off the one I opened first. And it has a timed release algorithm, so it affects things slowly.

Now the only problem that I've got is it spread over my network, and I forgot to pick up two copies of Norton. (Great) Apparently luck had to compensate for my good fortune, huh?

Well, although I missed the Retro comp this time, I'll be in the next one. (Provided I'm still alive. )

Thanx a lot to all the people who tried to help me. The four month ordeal is finally over. LOL.

P.S. What is the following smily supposed to be, a Ninja?
Or a monkey?

When you say network do you mean home network or a real network server? just curious, cause I use norton corp AV on my servers to prevent that from happening and at the desktop too. One server downloads the def files every night then propagates them to all the other servers. Before I worked here (at my work)they had no protection- I showed them that they had over 3,000 infected files across the state servers- got the funding the next day.

Yes, that was the problem.

Actually, the virus (if you have the one I did) is now inside of EVERY .exe and .scr (screen saver) you've used or opened sinced the problems started.

The virus did put a registry value inside of:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. It's named PINF. Delete it.

The virus also puts temp files on your comptuer in the:

C:\Documents and Settings\"Username"\Local Settings\Temp
or
C:\Windows\Temp

folders in the format of 3 random letters followed by a number. (Like lla1.tmp, xla1.tmp, lli3.tmp, ...etc.)

Be warned...if you're using Win XP, you can't delete these through Explorer (because the virus was in Explorer because of the PINF registry key and because the virus bugs some system process that the CTL + ALT + DEL window can't shut down. So the virus file is continually in use).

To get around this I had to restart the computer in DOS mode (I also have Win 98 on this comp) and manually delete it there.

I just realized that you could probably also do this through the MS-DOS prompt (or Command Prompt as Win XP calls it). But I'm not sure, so don't be alarmed if it doesn't work.

It's a fun virus to get rid of because you either scan the disk and repair as much as you can and delete everything else in one go, or the virus REINFECTS everything that the AntiVirus program fixed. (Norton in my case).
And after restarting with the virus still on the computer, the virus attacks Norton itself, rendering you unable to scan the computer again unless your un- and reinstall Norton. (Like I said, fun.) Took me 2 reinstalls to figure it out.

But like I said, I don't know if you have the same virus I do. Pick up an anti-virus program and check it out.

It's a home network. Probably went through when I played a bugged version of Jedi Knight 2. I haven't done any other multiplayer games over the net in a while. (Mainly because of the virus, but also because JK2 is so fun. )

You probally did this but, did you you check out symantec's web site for a specific virus remover. They help when the virus shuts down the AV engine.

first of all mr. hankey is a bit of crap in south park.

Secondly if it is the same virus, could I use a system recovery CD (which I got with XP) and start all over again or is the virus on XP.

thanx

Shady-- download a free AV or a 30day trail- I wouldn't go panic yet and reinstall everythig before you know what your dealing with.
Make sure the virus signature files are up to date. At the least it should identify the virus and maybe even remove it.

As far as virus scanning goes, I recommend using Trend Micro:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

It's an online virus scan, and it's free. This way you'll know for sure if you have a virus because it's online and the virus can't detect any anti-virus software.

Its a good lesson for everyone - get a Virus Scanner & keep it updated... And try not to use McAfee, its not that good.
