Its been quite a while since I've posted any work here, so I better get something up

Here is my latest work, not yet textured obviously, but its queued after a few others I need to finish up. Stygius is a pet project of mine, which I'm using to build up a portfolio if anyone is wondering.
This model being the main character.

Here are the concept sketches I did before hand, the mesh is the middle one:

The mesh:

Feel free to comment on it, changes can still be made

Wow, that is one damned fine model I can't wait to see it textured. How many polygons are in the face?

Come see the WIP!

that's a quality face for the number of polys. I don't think i can find fault, except maybe the knees are a bit too low.

very good jonny, good quality of work there, me-likes, keep up the good work, can't wait to see more of this pet project. I can see you haven't wasted polygons on details that can be shown in the textures. The polygons on the face have taught me an extra thing or two I think would make my faces less awkward to model and conserve more polies, so for that, cheers

wow! I am blown away! I agree, the knees are a wee bit low, but the quality of the model is amazing.

Funny, whenever someone makes an amazing model lik this, it's always the tiny, inconspicuos little flaws that stand out...
why?

Hello everyone, thanks alot for such nice comments on this mesh of mine. As for the knees, the reason they look low is because of the knee caps of the armor. The actual bending knee is further up the leg. Not that its pointed out though, I can easly see the confusion. I've done soem to try and fix it up a bit, but I'm pretty sure when its textured it will be easier to see where things are.

The mesh is still up for changes, so please comment on things if you see any.

ok, if you want me to be picky, you might need another loop under the arm pit, it looks like it could collapse when animated, and you might want to reconsider the hands, if you try and bend those with bones, they'll tear. as its so low poly compared to the detail, you might want to model the hands in a grabbing pose, or put in half a loop over each knuckle to support the movement.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Hey Manic: You're indeed right. I'm currenly tweaking the model, and I've already added animation support for the fingers. I didnt sport the area under the armpit but I'll get to that as well. Thanks for pointing it out

harrybarry: thanks

RichMan: I must admit I havent seen the film yet, so I cant confirm that other than the fact that both probably has a shoulder plate on the left shoulder as for sotware, I use Softimage|XSI foundation 4.2 an excellent piece of software

glad to help jonny. I can't spot anything else wrong with the model... maybe he could do with some accessories, like bracelets or something.

nice job on the hair by the way, i've plumped for a similar thing (although mine isn't as good) since i found DBP had problems with layered alpha on the same model.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Cloudef : He's certainly not gonna let you use them

Jonny : I have a freind whos a pretty darn good artist. He draws good ref images for my game. I attatched an example. He may not be as pro as you, but I still think he's rather good.

the hairline seems a bit receded to me, but maybe its the long hair giving that illusion. Or maybe hes going through a midlife crisis.

Excellent work again, I'm still working on your track.

Xenocythe: thats looking rather good thanks for your comment.

Cloudef: I'm sorry, all my models are either in use or is to be used. This one is for my own project.

Joe Cooning: Thanks, hope to have it textured sometime soon.

Oddmind: The hair is giving that illusion, once its textured you will see where the hair starts and ends.

Thanks again everyone

---

I finally got some time to myself after working almost day and night the past week. And even though I knew I should spend my time working on other peoples textures.. I had a breakdown and did a bit on my own model. I didnt get too far though, but to post some progress anyway I was able to finish the first few passes on the face.

Have a good day.

Absolutely amazing stuff - I'm surprised you haven't been snatched up by professional games developers like Epic...

(Just checking now - you haven't actually been claimed by any such companies, have you?)

Brilliant, Jonny Ree. Amazing Work as usual!

If you look closely... The texture "Half Head" on the Right of that pic looks a bit like Tom Cruise. To me it does anyway....

Looking great man! Did you just use a custom brush or somethin on that beard? It looks nice, though maybe a bit too sharply cut off at the cheek bone. Looks great though on the neck and mouth.

Also the eyes look a bit unatural... Unaturally cool that is I say screw reality and keep that color .

I reccomend looking at this first,

http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm

go back to that after you progress a bit more in your 2D skills

Second look into buying a WACOM tablet. your going nowhere without one

Look for some tutorials on painting, I like video tutorials myself.

start first with this:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3706764#post3706764

then maybe move onto something more like this

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=381097

Afterwards then something like this might make sence to you
(download hi def)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3733872&postcount=243

A good thing to do would to be watch once then watch and do then do without watching, for each one of those. its no short road to texture painting, but this will get you started.

After you have the rudiments, You will need to study every nick and cranny of the human anatomy. Human skin is anything but peach/brown, as you will see in the tutorials there are so many more colors in it that if they arent present makes the human look dead.

Just remember to block out first, then add detail on top fo that.

This is as far as i can point you in the direction, you will have to make realizations and connections yourself to better your skill and understanding of digital and traditional art techniques.

Good luck happy painting.

i'm at work, so i can only offer up a quick crit.

the texture looks blurry around the nose.
the cheekbone looks... weird
above the eyebrow the colours need to blend more
the creases of the eyebrow above the nose look to sharp to me
you could add a few brow lines, his forehead doesn't look as old as the rest of him

having said all that, i know its a WIP, so you might have been about to address all that anyway.

great mouth BTW

what i would say is that i prefer going for a full face unwrap, and a mirrored side of head, that way you can add all sorts of asymetrical detail to your texture. however, if you don't have space for that in your spec, then half a face is perfectly understandable.

I don't have a sig, live with it.
